COACH PROFILE: Marites Dalangin Killion

Coach Killion's full-time responsibility is as a wife and mother of two. She recently had her 2nd child and stopped teaching students English/ELD at the secondary level. She has coached for 10 years and considers it her source of entertainment and exercise.

Coach Killion began playing tennis her junior year at Apple Valley High School in 1982. Her love of the sport never waned. She continued playing socially until she returned to the High Desert in 1996. While completing her B.A. degree, she played competitively at Victor Valley College and Cal State San Bernardino where whe received recognition as a distinguished student-athlete.

Prior to coaching at Victor Valley College, Coach Killion had coached 4 years at the high school level for Apple Valley High School and Granite Hills High School. Both schools were undefeated in conference during her coaching tenure.

In 2007, she will be coaching her 6th season and hosting the Southern California Regional Championships. She has made vast improvements to the women's program throughout her tenure. By her second season, the Lady Rams broke their winless streak.

Our winless streak is broken! The sky is the limit for Lady Rams Tennis! says Killion. She strongly believes the Lady Rams will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. She has instituted a year-round training and conditioning program. She strongly believes in recruiting local high school talent.

In 2004, her dedication and team development was recognized by her coaching peers within the Foothill Conference. They had voted her Coach of the Year. Not only does Killion believe in her student-athletes' development, she continues to build on her own. She coaches private lessons and plays three times a week to keep her own skills honed. She is active in her profession. Killion is a member of the ITA and CCCTCA. She is also working on becoming a USTA High Performance Coach.

 

OBJECTIVE:

- Seeks to enhance the women's tennis program and develop student-athletes.

JUSTIN HARPER - Assistant Coach

 

Justin Harper enters his first year as assistant coach at Victor Valley College.  He was a four year Varsity player at Sultana High School where he played #1 singles his Senior Year and was MRL all League for three consecutive years.  Justin then went onto to play two years at Victor Valley College where he also played #1 singles and doubles. 

Justin went onto to play Open level tournaments in Southern California.  He got to the Semifinals in Singles of the prestigious DCB Open tournament in 2000.  Justin has also been a hitting partner for current ATP Professionals.  Justin has played against players ranked near the top 100 in the world.  These are experiences he can share with younger players.

Justin has taught tennis locally at Apple Valley High School as the Girl’s assistant tennis coach.  He has also coached USTA ranked Juniors Boys in Girls ranging in ages 10-18. 

He graduated in 2004 from Cal State San Bernardino with a B.S. in Kinesiology and a dual emphasis in Pedagogy and Adapted Physical Education.   He later went onto Azusa Pacific University where he graduated near the top of his class with his Masters.

He is excited to “come home” and bring his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game to the players here at Victor Valley College.
