Academy Application
ACADEMY APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY FEBRUARY 13TH, 2009
The Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy is a 348-plus hour intensive training program, Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 5:00 for 8 weeks. This course provides basic firefighter skills and knowledge with an emphasis on “Hands On” skills development. The course conforms to the standards for certification by the State Board of Fire Services and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
This course has strict standards that comply with those required of firefighters in the fire service. Grooming standards, dress codes, discipline and attitude are important standards that a firefighter must possess. Teamwork, self-confidence, self-discipline, quick thinking and the ability to follow instructions and orders accurately are emphasized in this course.
Cadets who successfully complete the academy will receive Academy certification from Victor Valley College. They may then be certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal after completing either one year as a volunteer firefighter or six months as a paid full-time firefighter with a California fire department and meet all other State requirements as required.
Other California State Fire Marshall or Certificates of Training that cadets may earn within the Firefighter I Academy include the following:
- Auto Extrication
- Rapid Intervention Crew Techniques (RIC)
- Fire Control 3
- Fire Control 4A / 4B
- I-100,S-190, S-130, L-180 (NWCG)
Recommended courses
All cadets should complete these courses and/or must obtain the corresponding certifications, prior to acceptance into the academy:

Process
There will be an Academy in the Spring and Fall semesters. All prospective cadets must complete an application packet that will be available on-line 8 to 10 weeks prior to the start date of the Academy.
All applications will be reviewed and scored, then all that meet the minimum requirements will be invited to an interview.
The top 36 cadets will be invited to attend the academy.

Uniforms
All cadets are required to wear the Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy uniform throughout the academy. The college book store does not carry all of these items, and they must be purchased at a uniform store.
