ACADEMY APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY DECEMBER 31, 2013

The Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy is a ten week, 400-plus hour intensive training program, Monday through Friday from 5:30  a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for 10 weeks. This course provides basic firefighter skills and knowledge with an emphasis on “Hands On” skills development. The course conforms to the standards for certification by the State Board of Fire Services and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

This course has strict standards that comply with those required of firefighters in the fire service. Grooming standards, dress codes, discipline and attitude are important standards that a firefighter must possess. Teamwork, self-confidence, self-discipline, quick thinking and the ability to follow instructions and orders accurately are emphasized in this course.

Trainees who successfully complete the academy will receive Academy certification from Victor Valley College.

They may then be certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal after completing one of the following:

  • one year as a volunteer firefighter,
  • six months as a paid full-time firefighter with a California fire department or
  • three sessions of FIRE 138 Co-Op internship, 

and must meet all other State Fire Marshal requirements.

Other California State Fire Marshall or Certificates of Training that cadets may earn within the Firefighter I Academy include the following:

  • Auto Extrication
  • Firefighter Safety and Survivability
  • Fire Control 3B
  • Fire Control 4A / 4B
  • I-100,S-190, S-130, L-180 (NWCG)
  • Low Angle Rope Rescue Operations (LARRO)
  • CAL FIRE FF1 / BASIC TRAINING

Required Courses

All trainees shall complete these courses and/or must obtain the corresponding certifications, prior to the first day of the academy:

EMS 60 Emergency Medical Technician  : Minimum course completion
FIRE 82A Hazardous Materials First Responder - Operational (HAZMAT FRO) : STATE FIRE MARSHAL CSTI CERTIFICATION
FIRE 66 Introduction to Incident Command (ICS 200) : MUST BE A STATE FIRE MARSHAL or NWCG CERTIFICATION
FIRE 11B Confined Space Awareness : STATE FIRE MARSHAL CERTIFICATION

All recommended courses are offered prior to the next academy.  You may apply even if you have not completed the pre-requisites.  You will need to show proof of enrollment at the Orientation and proof of completion prior to the first day of the academy.

Co-requisite Courses

  • FIRE 40A - Firefighter Phys Entrance Exam Techniques (1.0 unit)
  • FIRE 11 - Low Angle Rope Rescue Operations (0.5 unit)

Process

There will be an Academy in the Spring and Fall semesters. All prospective cadets must complete an application packet that will be available on-line 8 to 10 weeks prior to the start date of the Academy.

All applications will be reviewed and scored.  The top candidates will be accepted into the Fire Academy.

Tuition/Fees (13.5 units x $46.00 per unit) - $ 621.00

**Do not purchase anything until you've been accepted to the Fire Academy and attend the Public Safety Preparation Class on February 3, 2014.

Uniforms

All cadets are required to wear the Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy uniform throughout the academy. The college book store does not carry all of these items, and they must be purchased at a uniform store.

There will be a vendor at the orientation to provide these items.

Turnout Gear 

All trainees are required to provide NFPA 1971 compliant turnout gear that has been maintained according to NFPA 1851.  Trainees shall enter into a rental agreement with Fire Gear Rental prior to the beginning of the Academy.
