The Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy is a 400-plus hour intensive training program, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for 12 weeks. This course provides basic firefighter skills and knowledge with an emphasis on “Hands On” skills development. The course conforms to the standards for certification by the State Board of Fire Services and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Upon succesful completion of the Victor Valley College Fire Academy, you will have completed the Firefighter I Testing for International Fire Service Accreditation Council (IFSAC) and Pro-Board Certification.
This course has strict standards that comply with those required of firefighters in the fire service. Grooming standards, dress codes, discipline and attitude are important standards that a firefighter must possess. Teamwork, self-confidence, self-discipline, quick thinking and the ability to follow instructions and orders accurately are emphasized in this course.
Trainees who successfully complete the academy will receive a Firefighter I Academy Graduation Certificate from Victor Valley College.
Trainees may then be certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal after completing one of the following:
- one year as a volunteer firefighter,
- six months as a paid full-time firefighter with a California fire department or
- one year of Fire Internship/Work Experience (Fire 10). Student who successfully one year of Fire 10 will be offered added consideration in the Victor Valley College Paramedic Academy.
and must meet all other State Fire Marshal requirements.

All trainees shall complete these courses and/or must obtain the corresponding certifications, prior to the first day of the academy:
|EMS 60 Emergency Medical Technician : Minimum course completion - National Registry is NOT required.|
|FIRE 82A Hazardous Materials First Responder - Operational (HAZMAT FRO) : CSTI CERTIFICATION|
|FIRE 66 Introduction to Incident Command (ICS 200) : MUST BE A STATE FIRE MARSHAL, FEMA or NWCG CERTIFICATION|
|FIRE 11B Confined Space Awareness : STATE FIRE MARSHAL CERTIFICATION|
All recommended courses are offered prior to the next academy. You may apply even if you have not completed the pre-requisites. You will need to show proof of enrollment at the Orientation and proof of completion prior to the first day of the academy.

There will be an Academy in the Spring and Fall semesters. All prospective trainees must complete an application packet that will be available on-line 8 to 10 weeks prior to the start date of the Academy.
All applications will be reviewed and scored. The top candidates will be accepted into the Fire Academy. You can increase your chances of being accepted by also completed Fire 100, Fire 104, Fire 105, Fire 110.
Fees: Many fees can be covered by Financial Aid and Grants. You may contact the financial aid office for more information.

At Orientation you will be provided information regarding payment plans. At orientation, Trainees can set up the payment plan with no down payment and then the first payment will come out August 5th. Future payments (a total of 3) will come out the following months.
**Do not purchase anything until you've been accepted to the Fire Academy and attend the Public Safety Orientation Class.
All trainees are required to wear the Victor Valley College Firefighter I Academy uniform throughout the academy. The Uniform Vendor will be on-site during the Orientation. The Uniform Vendor maintains a large supply of uniforms that meet the Fire Academy specification. It is highly recommended that you purchase academy uniforms during orientation.
All trainees are required to provide NFPA 1971 compliant turnout gear that has been maintained according to NFPA 1851. Trainees may either provide their own turnout gear or shall enter into a rental agreement with Fire Gear Rental prior to the beginning of the Academy.
If you are sponsored by a Fire Department, they may provide you with NFPA 1971 Compliant turnout gear. The Fire Chief will need to provide a letter indicating that the provided gear is NFPA 1971 Compliant and maintained according to NFPA 1851. The letter will also need to indemnify Victor Valley College from damage that occurs to the provided equipment during the academy.
