The team primarily responsible for grant strategy implementation is led by the architect of the SAM plan, Stephen Toner, with leadership support from the Dean of STEM, Hamid Eydgahi. Professor Toner currently serves as the faculty department chair for the math program at Victor Valley College. His participative leadership style has garnered SAM broad based support from math faculty whose input will continue to shape the refinement and implementation of the plan.
Stephen Toner, Math Faculty, Chair / SAM Grant Program Administrator
Professor Stephen Toner taught math at the high school level for Apple Valley Unified School District from 1988 to 2002. He started teaching at VVC as an adjunct and became full-time in 2002.
Mr. Toner is an active member of AMATYC and is an AP Reader for AP Statistics exams each year. He is interested in anything technical. A member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, he enjoys digital photography, digital video editing and web site design.
In his spare time, Professor Toner likes to attend plays and musicals. He also loves to take cruises and travel.
Jessica Vera, Grant Administrative Secretary I
Jessica has worked in education for over 10 years. She graduated from VVC with an A.A. in Liberal Arts, was part of federal work study in E.O.P.S. as a Peer Advisor, and served in the Ready Rams Club under ASB.
After graduation, she earned a B.A. in Organizational Leadership at Brandman University and an M.S. in Educational Psychology from Kaplan University. Along with her education and experience, she brings an abundance of enthusiasm and excitement to support the goals of the SAM Grant here at VVC!
Alma De Santos, Grant Outreach Coordinator
Alma De Santos graduated from Victor Valley College in 2013 with an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts. She then transferred to Azusa Pacific University to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Business Organizational Leadership. Alma is currently attending Cal State University, San Bernardino working towards completion of a Master of Science in Psychology, with an emphasis in Counseling.
Alma's passion has always been in education. She has worked as a community liaison and academic advisor since 2007. Her goal is to guide students and parents on how to navigate a post-secondary education. She finds this work very rewarding and loves to see students succeed at their dreams.
Alma is a proud mother of four boys to whom she has devoted her life to. She loves to spend her free time with her boys and enjoy her cooking with them. She knows the true way to someone's heart is through food.
The SAM Grant Team also consists of Mathematics Department Faculty who serve on various positions to ensure the goals of the SAM Grant are being accomplished on a per-term basis. In addition to our Course Coordinators, each works with a team of Subject Level Contributors to support the overall goals of the grant!
