First Year Experience Application | Introduction

What is the High Desert Commitment?

The High Desert Commitment is the first-year experience program dedicated to providing support for students who have just graduated from high school and are attending VVC for the first time. The High Desert Commitment is divided into two unique tracks:”

Track A: This track is designed to assist female students who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). This track targets female students that are interested in transferring to the 4 year college/university in STEM majors and ultimately a career in the STEM field.

Track B: This track is designed to assist non STEM students who assess into basic skill/developmental courses and are interested in transferring to the 4 year college/university.

What is the UMOJA Program?

The UMOJA Program is first year experience program dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experience of students at Victor Valley College. The UMOJA program targets students that are interested in learning about African American history and culture. Traditionally African American Students have a lower success rate in community college, therefore the aim of this program is to promote academic and personal success as well as, encouraging transfer to 4 year colleges/universities.

The UMOJA program at Victor Valley College is divided into two unique cohorts: the Freedom Scholars and the George Washington Carver Scholars or the “Carverites”.

Freedom Scholars: This cohort is for students who are interested in non-STEM majors.

The Carverites: This cohort is for students that are interested in pursuing STEM majors.
