VVC's LEARNING COMMUNITIES

QUICK ACCESS:
HEROES
| 50/50 ODDS | THE AMERICAN COMPROMISE
| PSYCHO-ENGLISH!

Learning Communities put the same group of students together into two or more courses so that you get more time to work with other students and form partnerships that are so vital to a good college experience.

The instructors develop assignments, activities and lessons that complement each other and make the learning environment more integrated for the students.

The goal is to form a community of instructors and students that works together during the semester, but lasts long after the courses are completed.

Victor Valley College is offering four Learning Communities this Fall 2008 Semester:

HEROES
Everyone loves a hero, but did you know that not all heroes have the same characteristics? This LEARNING COMMUNITY will focus on heroes like Hercules, King Arthur and Harry Potter, developing ideas about their similarities and differences. We'll read about them, write about them, and watch films about them. When we're all done, you'll have a new understanding of what it means to live a heroic life. ENROLLMENT IN ALL THREE COURSES IS MANDATORY.

FALL 2008 COURSES:
- ENGL 8 - Section # 21734 - Pat Wagner
- ENGL 6 - Section # 21714 - Karen Tomlin
- ENGL 10 - Section # 21490 - Pat Wagner

50/50 ODDS
For most of us, 50/50 odds aren't great, but by taking English 50 and Math 50 together in a Learning Community, you are increasing your odds at being more effective as you complete your AA/AS or transfer-level classes. Join the 50/50 Learning Community and take a big step towards completing your degree with other students who have the same focus and determination to complete their degree as you do. (click on an Instructor's name to send them an email)

ENROLLMENT IN BOTH COURSES IS MANDATORY.

FALL 2008 COURSES:
- MATH 50 - Section # 21313 - Patrick Malone
- ENGL 50 - Section # 21632 - Pat Wagner

THE AMERICAN COMPROMISE
Explore U.S. History from its beginnings to the Civil War in a unique Learning Community that blends the history of the age with its literature. History Professor Tracy Davis explores the events and vital people of our nation's early years, while English Professor Tim Adell discusses the literature inspired, and created, by those people. Take History 117 and English 101 at the same time, and let each reinforce the other. (click on an Instructor's name to send them an email)

ENROLLMENT IN BOTH COURSES IS MANDATORY.

FALL 2008 COURSES:
- HIST 117 - Section # 21933 - Tracy Davis
- ENGL 101 - Section # 21507 - Tim Adell

PSYCHO-ENGLISH !
English and Psychology? Crazy writers in both fields of study? Come learn what and why they wrote what they did and how you may not want to write like them. You may even learn a little more about reading and writing at the college level and something about the people around you in the process. (click on an Instructor's name to send them an email)

ENROLLMENT IN BOTH COURSES IS MANDATORY.

FALL 2008 COURSES:
- ENGL 101 - Section # 21537 - Carol Golliher
- PSYC 101 - Section # 20910 - Liz Gersten
