Planning
Notes
from Dr. Tom Miller, Planning Faculty Facilitator
The work on our VVC Integrated Master Plan is on task and mostly
on time. The Steering Committee has been meeting regularly,
with often spirited discussion on a wide variety of topics related
to planning our collective future. I have been encouraged by
the active participation of folks from all segments of the campus
community. I have also been delighted by the cooperation and
support I receive whenever and wherever I ask for it. I have
joked that the entire campus is working for me; but in reality
the entire campus is working for "us" through this process.
Thanks to all the Chairs, Directors, Coordinators, program heads,
and staff who have worked with their planning groups to update
program forecasting and review. If your department has not yet
completed the program update, please do so very soon. We don't
want anyone to be left out, but we also can't get behind.
Work has now begun on breaking down all the input into areas
of interest to be given to our various working sub groups. As
an example, all the requests related in any way to facilities
will be given to a sub group composed of Steve McDevitt, Jim
Williams, Sharon Williams and Doug Hannaman, who will begin
the process of creating a comprehensive update to the facilities
part of the integrated plan. Each of the action item areas from
the departments and programs will be treated in this way.
The work of each sub group will comprise a separate chapter
in the Integrated Plan, summarizing the current state of the
college in that area, listing and categorizing the requests,
issues, and concerns submitted and explicating the process that
will be used by the appropriate college governance structure,
and submitting the list to be acted on by that structure over
both short (2 year) and longer planning cycles. Most importantly,
each plan section will conclude with the prioritized action
list produced by that governance process. It is this last step
that defines the notion of "integrated planning."
Again thanks to all who have contributed to date. And if you
get asked to help with one of the sub groups, please say yes.
It's a big job, but somebody's got to do it. If we don't do
it, it may be done for us-in ways we might not appreciate. |

Notes
from Dr. Eric Mayer, Grants Faculty Facilitator
On November 22, 2002, we held a Grant Proposal Workshop
with nineteen staff members in attendance. The majority of the
staff said the presentation was excellent. Tips were provided
on grant proposal development, budget development, funding sources,
how to write objectives, and overall guidelines for grant proposal
writing. In addition, a tour of the Planning and Resource Development
web site was presented. I would like to especially thank Holly
Nollner in Staff Development for all her help. If you have any
questions about grant proposals, you can contact me at ext.
2299 or e-mail, or Dr. Fay
Freeman at ext. 2414 or her e-mail.
