INTERACTIVE
TELEVISION PROGRAM
Over Fall, 2002, and this semester, the establishment of a new
form of Distance Learning has emerged on our campus in the form
of the Interactive Television Program. Thanks to a Mohave Desert
Air Quality Management District grant of $110,000 two separate
programs have been established; one for CSUSB to establish their
program of a wide variety of classes that are broadcast from
their campus to ours, and one for us to begin the first phases
of developing a program for VVC to broadcast classes to a remote
site. A second grant in the amount of $17,500 was received from
Verizon for the purchase of industry standard equipment (Polycom)
to be utilized by Lucerne Valley High School in order that we
might complete the implementation of the program.
Freddi Gold was tapped to facilitate the program and set up
training for instructors to adapt to the new technology and
to establish the training of technicians to operate the equipment
while the instructors deliver their classes. In an agreement
with Lucerne Valley High School Principal, Tom Hunter, and administrative
personnel from VVC, it was agreed to arrange for classes every
period, but to begin with only 2 or 3 classes. We subsequently
started with two Spanish classes, and this semester a Spanish
class and a History class. In the Fall of 2003, we are scheduled
to teach seven classes, Spanish, Physical Geography, American
Government and Politics, Effective Reading and Study Skills,
Jazz: A History, Small Group Communication and hopefully Art
Concepts.
The program is growing by leaps and bounds and will add to the
mission of VVC by adding to the economic development of the
community and by offering classes beyond the current scope of
the immediate plans to additional remote sites. In addition
to the technicians receiving hands on experience in this exciting
new field, instructors also expand their awareness of and abilities
in, the ever-growing establishment of Educational Technology
in the community college system. Future teachers taking ITV
classes have a definite opportunity to receive experience in
a medium that will undoubtedly become more and more familiar
on all campuses K-12 as well as on the college level. Anyone
interested in learning more about this opportunity for us here
at VVC is welcome to call Freddi at extension 2769.
