·     Art and Design

·     Photography

4.4B        Overall Goals For This Cluster

Short Term:

·     We will create a multimedia voc/tech program which will encompass digital imaging, graphic design, animation, video production, web design and instructional design.  Research and write curriculum for the multimedia voc/tech courses which will link art to the “real” world.

·     Remodel the existing center room of the Art Building to accommodate a Macintosh computer lab for digital imaging, animation and video editing.  The current photo labs of the building will be remodeled to better utilize our limited space and to accommodate a growing student population.

·     Create a three-dimensional program with new courses in three-dimensional media offered.

Long Term:

·     The creation of a regional museum of art to be used for instruction of arts management, museum studies and art history.

4.4C        Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

GOAL #1:   We will create a multimedia voc/tech program which will encompass digital imaging, graphic design, animation, video production, web design and instructional design.

Short Term Objectives:

·     Research other programs and base ours on what we feel are the most competent systems.

·     Create a sequence of courses which will utilize technology as a creative tool for the production of media.  The areas that the new Multimedia program will cover will be digital imaging, computer animation, video production, instructional media design and graphic design.  New classes will be implemented.

Long Term Objectives:

·     To have a functioning program and to make our courses easy for our students to access and to understand.

·     To have a broad range of courses which offer the student avenues of transfer or the pursuit of voc/tech career in the arts.

Resources Required - Short Term:

Personnel

·     The newly created program will impact the entire Department of Art and Design.  It will require a person to run the physical facilities of the new computer lab as well as the photography area labs.  This person will also teach courses in the new Multimedia area.  We will also need other personnel to teach areas of video production, animation, graphic design and instructional design.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Remodeling of the current Art Building is imperative if this new program is to exist and function.  A multi-use production studio is required for video production which can be shared with other components of the program.  Computers must be updated, along with software and other essential equipment.  Digital still and video cameras, editing equipment, lighting, furniture and space will be required for the new Multimedia area.

Other Requirements

·     Additional student personnel to run these new labs.

Professional Development

·     Conduct travel to research similar institutions programs in art.

·     Training of current instructors in new advances in technology will be needed.

Resources Required - Long Term:

Personnel

·     The multimedia field is a growth area in a variety of business applications from entertainment to media production.  This new area will also benefit Victor Valley College, enabling it to produce educational media which can be sold and distributed.  More teachers will be needed to accommodate this area and its projected growth.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Continual upgrading of equipment is necessary to keep our program current with marketplace that our students will enter.

Other Requirements

·     Funding for above facilities and equipment including maintenance of equipment.

Professional Development

·     Continued training for our instructors and staff in new technology.

GOAL #2:   Remodel the existing center room of the Art Building to accommodate a Macintosh computer lab for digital imaging, animation and video editing.  The current photo labs of the building will be remodeled to better utilize our limited space and to accommodate a growing student population.

Short Term Objectives:

·     Redesign the existing Art Building to accommodate new computers by the creation of a lab which will be used for instruction during the 1998 academic year.

·     To have a physical facility which will provide a safe, comfortable and productive atmosphere for the teaching and creation of art.

·     Current photo facilities have never been able to meet the student demands of the photography classes offered.  We believe this problem has prevented the program from growing.  The current facility does not adequately provide a proper environment for the development of film and printing of photographs.  We believe it to be unsafe, unhealthy and inadequate space.

·     Darkroom equipment will be needed for these new facilities in the form of large sinks, enlargers, lenses, timers, film dryers, print washers, print dryers, safe-lights and other misc. equipment.

Long Term Objectives:

·     Create a facility which will accommodate the number of students who enroll in a photography class.  This facility should be able to allow twenty-five students to work comfortably and safely.

·     Consider placing a limit on the number of students that can enroll in a photography class based upon how many can work in the darkroom at one time and not on how many can be seated in a lecture room.  Also consider that if there are thirty students in a class, each with three or four prints, the entire time of class will be spent on the critique with no time devoted to lecturing.

Resources Required - Short Term:

Personnel

·     A staff/teaching position will be needed to run both the new facilities for photography and the computer lab.  This person will also teach classes in photography and multimedia.  This person would also be in charge of student workers who run the computer and photo labs after hours in the evening and weekends.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Continual upgrade of equipment is necessary.  Current equipment needs to be replaced and upgraded.  The condition of the equipment impacts the quality of instruction, production of work and morale of the student.

Other Requirements

·     With the addition of new courses in video production, animation, graphic design and instructional design, student personnel will be needed to run the labs of the Multimedia area.

Professional Development

·     This new staff/instructor will need to attend seminars on the latest technology and must constantly stay informed.  This need will require considerable study to keep current for this changing field.

Resources Required - Long Term:

Personnel

·     An evaluation of further needs and effectiveness of services provided will be undertaken.  If needs warrant, additional staffing may be necessary.

Facilities/Equipment

·     When our programs grow as anticipated, a new structure will be needed to accommodate increased enrollments.  The current Art Building cannot house a television production studio, a lighting studio and a permanent room devoted to painting.  These needs will have to be addressed.

Other Requirements

·     None identified.

Professional Development

·     None identified.

GOAL #3:   Create a three-dimensional program with new courses in three-dimensional media offered.

Short Term Objectives:

·     Remodel the existing Art Annex to allow for the creation of a woodworking shop and a general work area.  The general work area would be created from the large open space which would be covered and converted into a finished permanent space.

·     The addition of a three-dimensional experience would enhance our students’ education as artists.  The study of 3-D is an important part of an artist’s experience in college.

Long Term Objectives:

·     Offer more courses in areas such as woodworking, welding, and casting.  Research the possibility of offering one course in ceramics.

·     Provide our students with a well-rounded art education in a wide variety of media.

Resources Required - Short Term:

Personnel

·     Classified assistant (Art Technician) for sculpture in charge of physical facility such as kilns, casting, woodworking, etc.

Facilities/Equipment

·     A new building will be needed to house the facilities needed for such a program.

·     Woodworking, welding, casting facilities will be created.  These new facilities will provide for (wheels, kiln, etc.) sculpture assembly areas.

·     Tool shed with tools and equipment will be needed.  Inventory, maintenance and check out of equipment will be the job of a classified assistant.

Other Requirements

·     Additional student personnel will be needed to run these facilities.

Professional Development

·     Research of other institutions and how they created and administer a sculpture program and its facilities will be conducted.

Resources Required - Long Term:

Personnel

·     A full-time instructor will be needed to oversee this part of the art program as well as run the facilities.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Upgrading of equipment will be necessary.

Other Requirements

·     None identified.

Professional Development

·     None identified.
