4.16     Program Cluster Goals, Objectives, Resource Needs - Electronics And Computer Technology

Electronics and Computer Technology

4.16A      Programs In This Cluster

·     Electronics Technology

·     Computer Technology

4.16B       Overall Goals For This Cluster

Short Term:

·     Expand Computer Technology and Electronics programs.

Long Term:

·     To offer programs and courses that mirror current industry needs in order to provide training that will be valuable for career entry and advancement.

4.16C       Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

GOAL #1:   Enhance Computer Technology Program.

Short Term Objectives:

·     Complete A+ certification curriculum development and implementation.

·     Update college catalog.

·     Change course numbers to reflect course offerings in computer technology.

·     Special topics:  these courses will provide students with the opportunity to explore topics in computer technology that are not currently offered in the regular program curriculums.

·     Adapt A+ certification program curriculum so that instruction and job training can be delivered in 18 weeks.  This will meet the needs of CalWORKs.

Long Term Objectives:

·     Continue to monitor the trends in computer technology and modify existing courses or introduce new courses to meet the changing technological demands; both academic and industrial.

Resources Required - Short Term:

Personnel

·     To hire full-time FTE (computer technology) instructor, and full-time classified electronics and computer technology lab specialist as required for program growth.

GOAL #2:   Strengthen Electronics Technology Program.

Short Term Objectives:

·     Complete telecommunications curriculum update (fiber optics and networking certification requirements).

·     Make catalog changes to reflect program curriculum changes.

·     Special topics:  these courses will provide students with the opportunity to explore topics in electronics technology that are not currently offered in the regular program curriculums.

·     Adapt individualized study courses in electronics technology areas that have high employment potential to meet the needs of projected CalWORKs students.  This will meet the criterion for short term job training programs demanded by CalWORKs.

·     Develop computer-aided recitation (problem solving) curriculum to support Electronics Technology core.  (Currently, problem solving successes are limited and organized by tutors.  A high tech computer lab provides the opportunity to expand recitations and also would be attainable using the Internet.)

·     Broadcast distance education lectures and realtime "blackboard" work over the Internet.

Long Term Objectives:

·     Develop distance education curriculums.

·     Continue to monitor the trends in electronics technology and modify existing course or introduce new courses to meet the changing technological demands; both academic and industrial.  It is anticipated that particular emphasis will continue to be placed on military and commercial trends in communications.

Resources Required - Short Term:

Personnel

·     None identified.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Complete technology classroom EL 1 to facilitate computer-aided instruction.

Other Requirements

·     None identified.

Professional Development

·     None identified.

Resources Required - Long Term:

Personnel

·     Establish budget.  Pay students for technical assistance in operating and maintaining Electronics and Computer Technology Department's "cyber academy."  This also will provide students with invaluable hands on experience with high technology electronics and networking.

·     To hire full-time FTE (electronics technology) instructor as needed for program growth.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Expand EL-1 technology classrooms technical operational capability to support distance education (cyber academy).

·     Department will require 5,000 square feet of building space in the projected new technology building plus adequate external space for radio frequency (RF) and ultra high frequency (UHF) antennas, large and small dish antennas, microwave antennas, and space for outdoor class meetings and demonstrations.

Other Requirements

·     None identified.

Professional Development

4.16D       Summary Of Requirements For This Cluster

Short Term (1998-2000):

Personnel

·     Computer technology faculty to meet present shortages and near-term new courses as determined by program growth.

·     Electronics technology faculty to meet near-term new courses and course expansions as needed by program demand.

·     Support staff to meet all program growth needs.

·     Annual instructional supply budget reflecting program growth needs.

·     Annual equipment repair/replace budget.

Facilities/Equipment

·     Complete Electronic Building modifications associated with the conversion of former classrooms EL-1 and EL-2 in electronics and computer technology laboratories.  Major items include:  install observation windows in walls between room EL-3 and EL-2 and also between rooms EL-2 and EL-1, construct small instructor's platform in room EL-1, carpet room EL-1, reposition electrical outlets in room EL-1, install glass door between rooms EL-2 and EL-1, modify alarm system, and modify two doors.
