4.18     Program Cluster Goals, Objectives, Resource Needs - Fire Technology

Fire Technology

4.18A      Programs In This Cluster

·     Fire Technology

4.18B       Overall Goals For This Cluster

·     Expand the existing program to serve the entry level fire fighting student, the general education student looking for a possible career in public and/or private fire protection, and the continuing fire fighter student seeking career enhancement, certification and advancement.

·     Develop and occupy modem fire training and adult education facilities using latest technology for instruction in fire fighting, rescue, emergency medical care and hazardous materials.

Short Term:

·     Develop curriculum to meet diverse student needs including: entry level fire fighter, the general education student interested in learning more about the fire service, and the continuing fire fighter student seeking added skills, career advancement and certification.

·     Add additional personnel to the Fire Technology Department to effectively administer, coordinate and deliver courses to the students.

·     Provide adequate classroom facilities dedicated to fire technology and/or public safety technology for the professional fire fighter.

Long Term:

·     Obtain and maintain those goals specified as short term.  We can provide the fire fighter student with the information, technology, and skills to do the job safely and efficiently.  We have the curriculum and the instructors to deliver these programs.  We need a full-time coordinator and we need facilities.  We can not go beyond our present level without additional staff and facilities.

4.18C       Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

GOAL #5:   Obtain adequate classroom facilities for fire technology programs.  The type and delivery format of fire technology courses, especially for the continuing education and certification programs require classrooms designed for adult learners, with access to computers, simulators, and latest technology for audio/visual presentations.  The eight hour day, three day to five day format common to workshops or conference presentations is best and requires separate facilities apart from the standard college classroom.  This arrangement is also vital to the fire academic programs for entry level instruction.  Classroom props and displays, demonstration models and equipment and systems provided by fire protection companies cannot be utilized due to a lack of space and security.
