4.20A      Programs In This Cluster

4.20B       Overall Goals For This Cluster

Short Term:  

·     Provide viable courses in the life sciences for the transfer student interested in majoring in biology or related fields.

·     Offer a variety of courses (both lab and non-lab) for the non-major student needing a life science course meeting graduation requirements.

·     Provide the courses required for students entering the allied health/medical fields.

·     Offer courses in life science that have community interest and are not necessarily designed to lead to a degree but are for self-improvement.

·     Two full-time instructors replacements for Louise Baartz (deceased 96).

·     Develop one "smart" classroom for use by the biology department.

·     Develop a "High Desert" Herbarium to be shared with other biologists throughout the state.

·     Microscope Replacements (Microbiology & General Biology).

   

Long Term:  

·     Increase FT faculty as required by program growth.

·     Increase the use of technology and innovative approaches for delivery of courses within the department.  Will require conference and travel funds for interested department members.

·     Create open entry/exit labs for human anatomy courses and general biology courses.

·     Additional computers for the biology labs.

·     CD ROM tower.

·     Continued replacement of microbiology and general biology microscopes over a period of several years.

4.20C       Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

   
GOAL #1:   Increase department offerings in both terms of number of sections offered and courses offered.  To include nontraditional courses via the Internet and/or distant education.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Offer an additional section of Microbiology.

·     Offer Biology Majors sequence more frequently.

·     Offer community interest courses (field studies, etc.).

·     Offer summer section of Human Physiology.

·     Offer Human Anatomy as a distant education course with A.D.A.M. labs.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Offer a second additional course in microbiology.

·     Offer 2-3 additional sections of general biology for non-majors.

·     Offer additional sections and courses as needed.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Immediate replacement for Louise Baartz (deceased 96).

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Replacement microscopes for microbiology and general biology.

·     Develop an adjunct faculty office within the department.

·     Develop Internet access from within the biology labs.

Other Requirements  

·     Additional lab aides for the additional courses.

·     Increase supply budget for additional courses.

Professional Development  

·     Staff development workshops for Internet courses.

·     Staff workshops for courseware development.

·     Increase Conference and Travel fees for attending professional development activities.

Resources Required - Long Term:

·     Employ more self-paced instructional materials for use within the biology labs.

·     Increase access to self-paced instructional materials across campus (for use in other labs besides biology).

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Increase number of computer stations within the biology labs (15-20 stations).

·     Additional CD-ROM tower.

Resources Required - Short Term:

·     Additional load for MIS I Technology support staff.

·     Support personnel for courseware development.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Campus classroom.
