4.22B       Overall Goals For This Cluster

Short Term:  

·     Continue expansion and full development of Music Major program cluster including integration of technology into teaching/learning and administrative functions.

·     Pursue development of integrative Core of Knowledge course(s) in Arts/Culture with other arts and history disciplines.

   

Long Term:  

·     Complete development of music major program.

·     Position program to secure accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music.

·     Consider development of Commercial Music class.

4.22C       Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

   
GOAL #1:   Continue the development and expansion of the general music program.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Add additional sections of Mus 1, 10, 13, 15A, 15B, 16A, 16B, 41, 42, 60A.

·     Reconstruct or add lab modules to Mus 1, 10, 15A, 15B, 41, 42.

·     Add new courses: Sight reading(open lab), CORE Integrative Arts course(s), Non-western choir music (Diversity) if not in CORE; Women’s Choir, Pep Band, Youth Band, Youth Demonstration Choir.

·     Expand software/hardware for music lab, including MIDI interfaces with piano lab units and upgraded software/hardware for Music 1/2/3 courses.

·     Expand the Applied music program as practice facilities become available.

·     Continue development of coordinated interaction with area schools, including annual High Desert Music Summits.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Add additional sections of above courses as needed and new courses including Concert Choir, Advanced Guitar, Day Wind Ensemble, College Chamber Orchestra.

·     Secure program accreditation from National Association of Schools of Music.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Additional full-time faculty in piano/theory or piano/literature as required by program growth.

·     Additional adjunct faculty in voice, choral music, history/literature, piano, instrumental music theory as needed for program demands.

·     Additional hours of lab assistant, accompanist and office worker support.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Upgrades and additional computer units.

·     More practice rooms, including at least 2 ensemble sized rooms; practice rooms to include computers; ensemble rooms to include variable acoustics (i.e. Wenger Z room) and on demand audio/video recording/playback.

·     Office space for the instrumental program and additional faculty.

·     Funding for new faculty, staff, and equipment as needed by program growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Complete remodeling of current music facilities or construction of new facilities.

·     Remodel to include:

·     Instrumental Rehearsal Center: 3,000 s.f. minimum, 700,000 c.f. nominal, with full sound proofing and tuned acoustics, meeting all OSHA standards for hearing safety; Wenger Z room or other variable acoustics and full range on-demand audio/video concert recreation recording/playback systems; studio style quiet climate control systems.

·     Choral/Vocal Rehearsal Center: 2,000 s.f. minimum, 500,000 c.f. nominal, with full sound proofing and tuned acoustics, meeting all OSHA standards for hearing safety; Wenger Z room or other variable acoustics and full range on-demand audio/video concert recreation recording/playback systems; could be designed to function as full studio.

·     Piano/Theory Lab: minimum of 30 stations, soundproofed; audio/video recording/playback systems; 30 MIDI piano lab units interfaced with computers.

·     Practice Rooms: at least 6 small rooms and 2-4 ensemble rooms (12-15 people);  all rooms to have computers, most to have pianos;  ensemble rooms to have on demand video/audio recording/playback.

·     Music Library:  500 s.f. minimum with proper storage shelves for scores, videos, CD’s and other departmental materials.

·     Offices: central music office; large studio offices connected to instrumental and choral rooms; 3 ft. offices, office space (possibly in central office) for pt.

·     Storage: adequate for storage of instruments, uniforms, equipment as needed–pianos, piano lab units, band and orchestra instruments, rehearsal chairs, music stands, computers, video/audio, and other equipment as noted above or as appropriate.

Other Requirements  

·     Increase supply budgets for additional performing ensembles.

·     Software budget for software licenses/purchase.

Professional Development  

·     Costs/released time/program support for technology development and training.

   
GOAL #2:   Pursue the development of integrative Core of Knowledge course(s) in Arts/Culture with other arts/history departments.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Initiate campus wide Core of Knowledge discussion/interaction.

·     Create a multi-discipline study group to develop Core of Knowledge courses.

·     Pilot test one or more courses by Spring 2000.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     An integrative course/courses in the Arts/Culture as part of the CORE.

·     A fully developed campus wide CORE program.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Additional faculty to team teach each course as needed by program growth.

·     Possible “graders” to support large section CORE classes.

·     Lab assistant support for lab portions of course as required by growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Large lecture facilities equipped with concert video/audio playback, computer projection and wireless or hard docking lab connections for student computers--Music 1 and Music 6 can suit this function.

·     Meeting rooms for smaller seminar groups as needed.

·     Access to campus computer labs for lab and Internet portion of course.

·     First class campus net support for interactive distance learning, including fully developed web sites, pages, and possible student video conferencing.

·     Funding/released time for technology training as needed.

Resources Required - Long Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Inter- and intra-department reorganization of current faculty staffing patterns to support integrative multidiscipline CORE courses.  May be a need for more faculty.

·     Additional staff support in lab assistants, graders, etc.

·     MIS support for technology labs, software, web sites.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Restructure rooms to support CORE program as needed.

·     Expand use of computers and other technology as appropriate.

·     None identified.

Professional Development  

·     Funding for ongoing develop and training necessary to update and expand CORE program.
