·     To provide a smooth transfer of mathematical information to the students.

·     To stimulate mathematical curiosity and the use of both deductive and inductive reasoning.  Build on the student’s intuitive grasp of mathematics.

·     To shift from the “filling station” approach to the instruction of mathematics to one which engages the student in the learning of mathematics.

·     To provide a structured system for managing the business of the mathematics department.

·     To provide service to other disciplines by linking skills learned in mathematics with skills the students need in other disciplines.

·     To improve the image of and experience with mathematics for our students and the community at large.

GOAL #1:   To improve the teaching of mathematics at Victor Valley College.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     To have presentation technology available in two mathematics classrooms.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Additional faculty in the mathematics department to accommodate growth and to decrease the percent of classes taught by adjunct faculty.

·     To have presentation technology in the remaining mathematics classrooms.

Resources Required - Short Term:

GOAL #5:   To improve the community-wide image of and experience with mathematics in the context of a Mathematics Exploratorium (ME).
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     To create a Mathematics Exploratorium storage space on campus.

·     To obtain mathematical manipulatives, games, or other materials that illustrate and/or make enjoyable some fundamental mathematical topic.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     To create a permanent location for the Mathematics Exploratorium with portable units for travel.  The location to be accessible to the community at large.

·     To create a workshop/classroom location for area elementary and secondary teacher enrichment.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     A 0.5 FTE employee to manage/organize materials in storage and prepare them for use in the ME.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     600 s.f. of storage space for materials.

·     Shelves and cabinets for storing ME materials.
