4.27B.2    Overall Goals For This Cluster

Short Term:  

·     Develop Core of Knowledge and skills within all Social Science disciplines which now include Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science and Sociology.

·     Expand curriculum and delivery methods to meet the diverse needs of the professional and student community.

·     Investigate the feasibility of offering an Associate of Arts major in Social Science.

·     Increase Multicultural awareness within the Social Sciences and the Victor Valley Community.

·     Establish a measurement of Instructional Effectiveness with the Social Science Department.

   

Long Term:  

·     Establish a permanent block of classrooms or a building dedicated to the Victor Valley College Social Science program.

·     Offer certificate programs that are relevant to the Social Science program.

·     Implement Instructional Effectiveness within the Social Science Department.

4.27C.2    Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

   
GOAL #1:   Increase Geographic Core of Knowledge by offering additional curriculum within Geography.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Add World Regional and California Geography courses.

·     Add Geographic Information Systems Technology courses.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Offer a degree in Geography.

·     Offer a degree or certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Hire additional part-time faculty to meet growing enrollment needs.

·     Hire a laboratory assistant for the Physical Geography Lab classes (presently serving 70+ students), and a student aide as required by program growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     A permanent Geography classroom for lecture and laboratory with cupboards and cabinets to house and display supplies and equipment securely.

·     Order Physical Geography lab equipment and instruments to supply a Physical Geography Laboratory of eight stations with 4-5 students per station.

Other Requirements  

·     Maintenance of classroom facilities, media equipment, maps and instruments.

·     Computer stations and Internet access within the Geography classroom.

Professional Development  

·     Attend workshops and conferences to stay current on geographically related California and World events as well as Geographic Information Systems technology.

·     Survey other Community Colleges for possible course additions to supplement the Core of Knowledge within Geography and articulate these courses with the universities.

·     Hire full-time Geography instructor to meet the increased enrollment demands of expanding curriculum.

·     Continued support from a Physical Geography lab assistant and a student aide.

·     A permanent Social Science building or wing where lecture and Laboratory classrooms relating to Geography would be located.

·     Order lab equipment and instruments to supply eight Physical Geography Laboratory stations with 4-5 students each.

·     Computer stations and Internet access within the Geography classroom.

Professional Development  

·     Attend workshops and conferences to stay current on geographically related California and World events as well as Geographic Information Systems technology and additional technology in the field of Geography.

·     Offer Distance Education opportunities in the form of Cultural and World Regional Geography Telecourses and Internet courses.

·     Implement programs in Geographic Information Systems Technology to allow upgrading of skills for re-entry individuals and to address continuing workforce improvement.

·     Offer Geographic Information Systems Technology training to diverse professional groups such as those in local, regional and federal governmental agencies and private corporations.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Develop an Internet course in Geography.

Resources Required - Short Term:

·     Hire additional part-time faculty to meet growing enrollment needs.

·     Hire a Physical Geography lab assistant and a student aide as needed to meet program growth demands.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     A permanent Geography classroom for lecture and laboratory with cupboards and cabinets so that equipment and instruments can be housed and displayed securely.

·     Order Physical Geography lab equipment and instruments to supply a Physical Geography Laboratory of eight stations with 4-5 students per station.

·     A classroom within the Social Science department with computer stations for students providing access to GIS training.

·     Establish an interdisciplinary curriculum within the Social Science Department to focus on multicultural issues.

·     Create a program of community forums which discuss issues of multicultural awareness.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Offer a certificate and/or a degree in Social Science.

·     Offer a certificate and/or a degree in Social Science with an ethnic studies emphasis.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Hire part-time and full-time faculty who would complement a multicultural curriculum as required by program growth.

·     Offer support services related to the Social Science program.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Use of PAC for community programs.

·     Publicity, mail, Media Equipment, Internet access.

·     Lecture classrooms to accommodate increased enrollment.

Other Requirements  

·     None identified.

Professional Development  

·     Attend workshops and conferences relating to multicultural issues.

·     Meet with community members to discuss multicultural issues for inclusion into curriculum.

Resources Required - Long Term:

·     Hire additional full-time faculty members to support the multicultural program within the Social Science cluster as demand requires.

·     Secretarial support.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     A permanent Social Science building or wing to house exclusive classrooms for all disciplines within Social Science.

·     Additional classrooms as enrollment increases.

·     Meet with community members to discuss multicultural issues which should be incorporated into the Social Science curriculum.

4.27D.2    Summary Of Requirements For This Cluster

Short Term (1998-2000):  

Personnel  

·     Hire additional part-time faculty as needed for program growth.

·     Hire a full-time Sociology faculty member if required by program growth.

·     Hire a Physical Geography Laboratory Assistant as needed due to program growth.

·     Hire a Social Science student aide/secretarial support to accommodate growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Permanent classrooms for all disciplines within the Social Science Department now including Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology.

·     Computer and Internet access within at least one dedicated Social Science classroom.

·     Locate a permanent Physical Geography Laboratory classroom and purchase equipment to accommodate eight stations with 4-5 students per station.  Presently the program has 70+ students.

Other Requirements  

·     Physical Anthropology laboratory equipment.

Professional Development  

·     Workshops and conferences relating to individual Social Science disciplines.

Long Term (2001-2005+):  

 

Personnel  

·     Hire additional full-time faculty in History, Political Science, Geography, and multicultural (ethnic) studies as required by program growth.

·     Hire a permanent Physical Geography laboratory assistant as needed for growth.

·     Permanent secretarial and student aide support for the Social Sciences to accommodate program demand.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     A permanent Social Science building or wing where dedicated lecture and laboratory classrooms in all five disciplines would be housed.

·     Computer and Internet capabilities within these classrooms with Geographic Information Systems Technology available in a permanent computer lab.

·     Purchase of equipment, materials, media equipment, computers, supplies as necessary to provide for each classroom within the Social Science Department.

Other Requirements  

·     Maintenance of Social Science classroom facilities, media equipment, maps and instruments.

·     Upgrading of equipment, media equipment, materials, maps and instruments as necessary.

Professional Development  

·     Support attendance at conferences and workshops relating to all disciplines within the Social Science Department.
