Short Term:  

·     Increase course offerings in Anthropology.

·     Develop program and course offerings.

4.31C.1    Specific Goals, Objectives And Resource Needs For This Cluster

   
GOAL #1:   Increase the number and types of Anthropology course offerings, expanding the Core of Knowledge for this discipline.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Develop Physical Anthropology Lab class.

·     Develop Archaeology Lecture class.

·     Develop Archaeology Field/Lab class (course can also be offered as community services course).

·     Develop Independent Studies/Special Topics courses.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Develop additional courses in Anthropology (e.g., Survey of Primates, Museum Studies, advanced sections in physical and archaeology courses).

·     Develop multimedia presentations for use in class lectures and lab exercises.

·     Develop Internet courses in Anthropology.

·     Develop community outreach program for K-12 (e.g., lecture presentations, archaeology “digs”).

·     Develop museum displays (for college and community outreach).

·     Develop a small library for anthropology (for student use) associated with the museum display areas.

Resources Required - Short Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     No additional faculty.

·     One lab assistant as required by program growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Dedicated “smart” classroom for Anthropology lecture and lab classes.

·     Additional dedicated workspace areas for lab/field classes, with storage areas and equipment.

·     Location(s) for the Anthropology museum displays.

·     Equipment for Physical Lab and Archaeology Field/Lab courses.

Other Requirements  

·     Equipment replenishment/maintenance budget.

Professional Development  

·     Attend conferences and professional meetings to keep current on research in the discipline.

·     Attend related workshops and review current literature to learn about the new techniques available or in use.

Resources Required - Long Term:  

 

Personnel  

·     Hire part-time faculty as student demand or course offerings increase.

·     Hire part-time student worker in addition to lab assistant.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Expansion of laboratory workspace(s) and storage facilities as needed.

·     A computer bank for student use for lab exercises, word processing, data manipulation.

·     Possible separate location for museum displays.

·     Software/hardware upgrades for computers as needed/required.

GOAL #2:   Develop Certificate Program(s) in Anthropology.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Beginning with one area – archaeology – determine if similar programs exist at other community colleges.

·     Develop a basic certificate program for archaeology field and laboratory work.

·     Explore the practicality of this program in regard to student desirability to 4 year colleges (e.g., the college’s desire to have the student transfer).

·     Explore current and future employment possibilities with Cultural Resource Management Companies.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     Fully develop and implement an Archaeology Certificate Program (2 year program).

·     Begin developing a Physical Anthropology Certificate Program.

·     Explore the practicality of a Cultural Anthropology Certificate Program.

·     Explore the practicality of a Museum Studies Certificate Program.

·     Develop internships for students with local institutions, museums, zoos, etc.

Resources Required - Short Term:

GOAL #3:   In-house Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Team.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Determine the feasibility of developing and maintaining a contract (paid) archaeological research unit.

·     Survey CRM companies to determine desirable experience/training for new hires.

·     Survey CRM companies to determine the feasibility of intern programs.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     If feasible, implement a CRM unit at VVC.

·     If feasible, develop internship program to facilitate student on the job learning.

Resources Required - Short Term:

·     Hire a part-time student assistant as required by program growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Dedicated “smart” classroom for Anthropology lecture and lab classes.

GOAL #4:   Plastination Laboratory.
   

Short Term Objectives:  

·     Determine the feasibility of a plastination laboratory (for the preservation of organic specimens).

·     Survey other colleges to determine costs, set up, etc.

·     Contact VVC Biology Department in regard to combined interest in, or use of, lab facilities.

Long Term Objectives:  

·     If feasible, develop a plastination lab at VVC.

·     Experiment with preservation techniques as they apply to archaeology.

·     Explore the feasibility of selling specimens and/or providing preservation services to other institutions.

Resources Required - Short Term:

·     No additional faculty.

·     Hire a part-time student assistant as required by program growth.

Facilities/Equipment  

·     Dedicated Laboratory space and storage facilities for plastination process.

·     Equipment for plastination process, preparation, storage, disposal, etc.

·     Equipment replenishment/maintenance budget.
