4.32B.1 Overall Goals For This Cluster |
Short Term: |
· The course offerings in Speech Communication will be expanded by adding a new course each semester beginning with Intercultural Communication in Spring 1999 and continuing into the long term plans. Public Speaking courses will be developed using the facilitator approach as described in the Speech Program Review - March 1995. · Course numbering will be reviewed so that assigned numbers will correspond to CAN. · Support staff composed of work study students and a classified departmental secretary to be shared with the theater arts cluster will enable this task and other ongoing departmental paper work requirements to be met in a timely manner. · A sign language certificate program must be developed very soon. The research and course development is already done. Sign language will most likely meet the second language requirements at universities for teaching credentials. One full-time faculty is needed to make this program viable. · In order to meet the demands of the student population and the requirements of the disciplines of speech communication, a facility dedicated to the unique character of speech courses and a support staff of instructional aides is necessary. Such a facility and aides will increase the number of students public speaking and other speech courses can accommodate. The idea of converting the north end of the old science building into such a facility has been discussed with administration and management and has been encouraged (Dr. Pell and John Beale). · Additional full-time certificated instructors will also be needed due to rising student population and additional courses. |
Long Term: |
· Additional courses will continue to be added until the department has a full complement of courses ranging from Interpersonal Communication courses through Mass Media offerings. A Special Topics course that changes the content from semester to semester will be developed to address specific areas of the discipline. These are listed under long term objectives for Goal II. · If the current facilities are not adapted to the needs of communication courses, a building would need to be constructed or the plans of offering a full spectrum and courses and innovative and cost-effective methods of delivery will be severely limited. · Additional faculty and support staff will continue to be needed to support the planned growth. |

4.32D.1 Summary Of Requirements For This Cluster |

Facilities/Equipment |
· The following parameters are drawn from the 1995 program review that cites an ideal facility already in place at Mt. San Jacinto College. Two buildings fit the following description. The building consists of a large room (930 square feet) which can easily accommodate 65+ people and which is bordered by four smaller rooms (225 square feet each) which open into it. The large room is used for the opening mini-lecture and closing discussion with the instructor. The smaller rooms are used for the video-taped deliver of speeches by four groups of 12 to 15 students and their peer facilitators. This facility enables all video equipment and materials to be stored at that site. Several possibilities exist for creating appropriate facilities. The old science building could provide the shell for the facility with interior walls built to accommodate the design and needs of this facility. Other possibilities would be to build a new building similar to the one at Mt. San Jacinto, to incorporate a similar structure into the Performing Arts complex, or to convert the overhang on the existing music building into small group rooms and use Music 1 as the large lecture room. The science building conversion would be the most efficient. This model could serve sign language and theater courses as well. · If a facility were built in conjunction with a black box theater (see Theater Arts cluster) some equipment could be shared. · Office space for all full-time speech communication faculty that allows frequent contact. · TV/VCRs and cameras. |
