Volume Six Coming Soon - Rams Week

Rams Week was once the tradition at Victor Valley Community College, and, thanks to the spirit team, it has been revived.

It is a time for games, recognition, good-natured competition, great food, and fun.

The cut-off time for team registration is Monday, April 26, 2004, by 5 p.m.
Rams week is scheduled for the week of May 3 through May 7, and families are invited to join in the festivities on Friday, May 7, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Check your e-mail messages for sign-up sheets, times, and dates of events and contests.

Rams Week is being sponsored by the following businesses: Daily Press, Albertsons, Elegant Edibles (Debbie Peterson’s company), Range RV, Boone’s Bail Bonds, US Food Service, Pepsi, Morgan Stanley-Dean Whitter, Greiner Pontiac, Dr. Stein, Xerox, ASB, the Victor Valley College Foundation, Ram’s Bookstore, and Restaurant Management.

Dr. Tom Miller’s Son Coaches National Championship Volleyball Team

Music Department Chair Tom Miller is the proud father of a NIRSA National Champion Men's Volleyball player (1999) who is now a NAIA National Championship Men's Volleyball coach.

Dr. Miller’s son stepped up from his assistant coaching position to take the helm of the California Baptist University men’s team when the head coach had to return home for the birth of his first child. He led the team to victories in the semi-final and final round of the tournament.

 

Mercy Air Lands on Campus

Students in the Paramedics Program were involved in an unusual training exercise when Mercy Air descended on the campus this past Thursday. The helicopter landed behind the Allied Health portables and was incorporated in the day’s EMS operations curricula.

The campus visit was coordinated by VVC's Paramedic Program Director, Scott Jones, and Paramedic Clinical Coordinator, Brian Hendrickson.

 

Model United Nations Team Wins Award

After nine months of hard work, the Model United Nations team at Victor Valley College walked away with an award at the National Model United Nations conference in New York. Representing the country of Tajikistan, VVC students earned Honorable Mention in only their third year of existence.

VVC competed against 3,100 other participants from over 190 schools located in 44 different countries.

VVC students were judged to be in the top ten percent of their respective committees every day. To accomplish this goal, VVC students performed better than students from the London School of Economics, UCLA and University of Chicago. VVC was one of only 25 schools out of 190 to win.

New Information Source on College’s Web Site

New information is now available to the campus and the community on the existing VVC Web site.

Springtime in Italy, Anyone?

Plans are in the works for another spring break getaway, and Italy is the destination. The trip is scheduled for nine days from March 24 through April 1, 2005, and is routed through Venice, Florence, and Rome

If three people sign up by May 15 and pay the initial $395, the price will be guaranteed at $1899, which includes air fare, hotels, all transfers, buses, tours, breakfast, and dinner. The price will go up about 10% in the fall. The contact person for this trip is Claudia Basha in the English Department.

 

 

C-SPAN Bus Visits Campus

VVC students and community representatives were treated to a special visit by the nationally recognized C-SPAN bus and staff who are traveling around the country introducing potential viewers with the network’s educational mission and programming capabilities.

Community relations and educational assistants for C-SPAN used the opportunity to give tours, air high profile news footage, and answer questions from interested students and local residents.

More Nominations for Who’s Who Among American’s Teachers

Congratulations are in order for Bob Kirkham, Patricia Jennings, James “Patrick” Malone, Dolphus “Pete” Rector for being nominated by students to be included in the Who’s Who Among American’s Teachers publication for 2003- 2004.

Bob Kirkham is a physics instructor and has taught at VVC for 25 years.

Patricia Jennings is an instructor in psychology and has been teaching full-time for three years.

James “Patrick” Malone is a math instructor and has taught full-time for almost four years.

Dolphus “Pete” Rector is an adjunct instructor in the business department and has been with the college for 12 years.

Dr. Prem Reddy Honored for Donation


At a campus dedication ceremony held this past week, Dr. Prem Reddy was honored for his $1 million donation to the college’s health science programs.

A large contingent of community leaders, students, and staff were in attendance for the unveiling of a brass commemorative plaque which heralded the name change for health sciences. The allied health programs at Victor Valley College will now be collectively known as the Dr. Prem Reddy School of Health Science.
