Honoring a teacher prior to graduation ceremonies may seem a little unusual, but as it turned out it was a very appropriate time to make an award presentation for the latest Teachers R Heroes honoree. Surrounded by fellow teachers, college administrators, Trustees and special guests, longtime Victor Valley Community College English and Basic Skills Instructor, Mrs. Carol Golliher, was surprised to learn that she was the latest teacher to be honored.
Nominators wrote glowing essays on behalf of Mrs. Golliher in an attempt to describe her teaching and interpersonal skills so that she would be selected for the TRH award. One such person wrote, “Mrs. Golliher is an instructor who is willing to help her students no matter how long, or how many times it takes for a student to understand the assignment. She explains and understands that all students are not alike and takes that into consideration. Out of all the instructors I have had at Victor Valley College she has been the most caring, understanding, and helpful. She is, most of all, a great person.”
Another person wrote, “Carol Golliher is a hard working English teacher who teaches her students to respect, appreciate and learn to love the English language. She carries out her lesson plans and assignments to the fullest. Everything on her lesson guide is assigned and explained with access to her for further understanding. The options and assistance she provides the student with leaves no space or opportunity to fail her class. She has a close one-on-one with each one of her many students. She is informative and very helpful assisting students to achieve higher English skills. She takes the time to learn each student’s strengths and weakness and helps them to learn how best they can understand and achieve. Mrs. Golliher opened a new and greater height of learning abilities I was not aware I had. The care and attention given by Mrs. Golliher for each and every student is unique and a sure way of bringing each student to his/her highest potential; therefore, she is a hero.”
The Teachers R Heroes program that honored Mrs. Golliher and other teachers like her is sponsored by Victor Valley College, El Dorado Broadcasting and San Bernardino County Schools.
