The track and field program at Victor
Valley College has been continuously growing since
it began three years ago. Head Coach John Paine
is happy with the direction that the program is
going.
"This year we're stronger
in numbers, stronger in talent, stronger in ability
and stronger in the desire to compete," he said.
Stronger in numbers indeed;
with 30 athletes on the men's team and 12 athletes
on the women's team, this is the largest turnout
for track since the program began.
"We just had to convince the
athletes that although we may not have top-notch
facilities like some of the other colleges, we
have the coaching staff here to help build a successful
program," said Paine.
This year, the men
finished 3rd and the women finished
2nd in the Foothill Conference.
"This is really an accomplishment
after just three years," said Paine.
There are many standout
athletes on both teams this year. Josh Lange and
Terrance Ruffen have made great contributions
to the men's team. All-around athlete Rabb Aliyy
has also been a major contributor to the men's
team. Aliyy holds school records in the men's
100-meter dash with 10.86 seconds, the long jump
with 22ft. 4in., and the triple jump with 45ft
2.5 in. Also, Aliyy has the second longest throw
in the javelin with 139 ft. "He has been a real
positive influence to the team," said Paine.
Amy Lafferty has been an outstanding
runner for the women's team. She has excelled
in the women's 100-meter dash with 12.66 seconds,
breaking the previous school record. Lafferty
also did very well in the 200-meter dash with
25.8 seconds. Other contributors to the women's
track and field team are Deven Brenier, Erica
Varala, and Angie Espinosa. "We have a great team,"
said Paine. "Each year we continue to grow and
be successful."
