18th Brigade, 164th Battalion
of the California Cadets Corps of Victor Valley
Junior High School. Major Felix Diaz led the audience
in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dr. Fay Freeman,
interim superintendent/president, welcomed students,
families and friends to the ceremony on behalf
of the VVC faculty and introduced the VVC Board
of Trustees and administrators. EOPS counselors
Peggy Nunez and Manuel Gaytan made encouraging
remarks following their introduction to students.
"I just want you to know that
I'm really proud of you guys and you're doing
an excellent job," said Gaytan. Nunez
made remarks with quotes from E. M. Gray, Albert
Einstein and Wil

The ceremony continued with Smith
telling the story of "The Nickel and The Nail,"
the theme for the EOPS/CARE ceremony. The moral
is being content with a meager fortune and "walking
a little bit straighter and with a little more
pride and dignity." The executive committee of
the California Community Colleges EOPS Association
adopted the theme in 1971 as a symbol of the aid
offered to community college students.
The Nickel and Nail Teacher
of the Year Award went to math professor Louis
Shahin, then awards were presented to students
with outstanding grades, and the ceremony closed
with the retiring of colors.
