Sowinski awarded for 9/11 memorial design

Victor Valley College student Joan Sowinski was awarded a $500 scholarship for a design she created for a 9/11 memorial. The scholarship was awarded to Sowinski through the Desert Valley Charitable Foundation.

Sowinski’s memorial design will be displayed as a monument in front of the VVC library in a triangular grass area, which is also the shape of the design. When it came to creating the design Sowinski said, “I did it on paper,” and that it took her “a month of thought process.” She credits her sculpture instructor, Mr. Bosworth in helping her with ideas.

     According to Director of

Marketing Jana Retes from Desert Valley Medical Center in an e-mail response, “It was decided to have the monument built on the VVC campus so it can be enjoyed up close and personal, and be interactive, rather than along the freeway, etc.”

A dedication to Sowinski’s 9/11 monument is scheduled to take place, Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, and that day also happens to be

Patriots Day, according to Retes.

After the 9/11 attacks occurred, Desert Valley Hospital and Medical Group sponsored a walk called “United We Stand” to raise money for the monument. The monument was decided to be built at VVC, so a contest was held to get art students involved.

VVC Model UN wins at New York

Victor Valley College Model United Nations competed at the National Model United Nations conference which was held

April 11 to 16 at New York City. VVCMUN was awarded two awards which were “Outstanding Delegation” and “Outstanding Position Paper.” This is the third consecutive year that VVC has been recognized for their work and expertise in the conference. In 2005, VVC won “Outstanding Delegation” and in 2004 they were awarded ‘Honorable Mention.”

National Model United Nations Conference was attended by 3600 students from

360 schools all over the world. What makes this award so special to VVC is that from the 360 schools that attended there were only seven junior colleges and the rest were prestigious four-

year universities. “We were the underdogs at the conference” said Sharon Wright, who was a chaperon at the conference.

There were 13 team members from VVC. They were all led by the head delegate who was Daniel Leyva. The advisor to VVCMUN is Dino Bozonelos who was also nominated to the board to help organize the committee.

“The people in the VVCMUN team worked really hard; they were assigned Albania. They researched the country and its politics. They drafted resolutions to see what the country needed. They worked with the committees. They started at seven in the
