Mission Statement of Victor Valley College

The mission of Victor Valley Community College is three-fold:

To enable students to succeed and to develop competence through academic and vocational instruction at the lower division college level. This instruction will lead to the granting of certificates and degrees as well as transfer to other institutions;

To contribute to community and state-wide economic growth and competitiveness through vocational and technical instruction leading to employment, continuing education, student support services, adult non-credit instruction, and instruction in basic skills and English as a Second Language;

To foster personal development and life-long learning through culturally enriching programs and activities for the expanding learning community.

Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee Purpose: To facilitate cohesive and collaborative campus-wide planning, implementation, and evaluation of institutional outcomes. Working with the Academic Senate as well as the non-instructional segments of the institution for Student Learning Outcomes in order to build shared knowledge and responsibility campus-wide.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. Master Plan Goal - Organizational Excellence - The College's governance roles and processes are structured to maximize institutional effectiveness.

    Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee Goal 1 – Increase the institutional capacity to develop and implement student learning outcomes campus-wide to better serve students.

    Sub-goal 1a: In the Master Plan, develop a component for Student Learning Outcomes that includes the identification of the roles, the timelines, and the responsibilities that different college departments, units, committees, and groups play in directly or indirectly supporting student learning.

    Timeline for Objectives: December 2005
    • Assess campus culture, gather evidence, and increase the dialogue about student learning outcomes campus-wide.
      • Responsibilities = SLO Steering Committee, Institutional research Office
      • Assessment Tool = Student Satisfaction Survey to include questions pertaining to student learning outcomes

    • Provide training through the following activities: campus-wide dialogue, workshops, “Coffee Klatches", department training and information sessions, meetings, forums, online discussion boards, and conferences.
      • Responsibilities = SLO Steering Committee, Faculty Senate Learning Assessment Committee, Curriculum Committee, SLO trainer
      • Scheduled training:
        1. SLO workshop provided by the Faculty Senate Learning Assessment Committee (April – June 2005)
        2. SLO workshop provided by the curriculum committee (April – June 2005)

    • Collaborate with the Faculty Senate Learning Assessment Committee, Master Plan Committee, Program Review Committee, Accreditation Steering Committee, Curriculum Committee, Graduation Requirements Committee and other committees as appropriate.
      • Responsibilities = SLO Steering Committee

    • Develop a website to share information about institutional outcomes as well as the categorization of SLOs campus-wide.
      • Responsibilities = Institutional Research Office

    Sub-goal 1b: Provide for the integration of student learning outcomes into the College’s planning, evaluation, research, resource allocation, and other decision-making processes.

    • Work with departments and services to develop and identify goals and measurable objectives for student learning outcomes.
      • Responsibilities = Managers, SLO Steering Committee, Department Chairs, and Classified

    • Integrate goals and objectives for student learning into the Master Plan Goals and objectives.
      • Responsibilities = Managers, SLO Steering Committee, Department Chairs, and Classified

    • Integrate student learning outcomes into campus-wide processes such as planning, program review, research, curriculum, and resource allocation.
      • Responsibilities = Managers, SLO Steering Committee, Department Chairs, and Classified

    • Investigate and identify resources and staffing needs required to accomplish these goals and objectives.
      • Responsibilities = Managers, SLO Steering Committee, Department Chairs, and Classified

    • Identify core competencies in the College Catalog.

  2. Master Plan Goal - Institutional Commitment to Student Learning and Student Success through Educational Excellence - Student learning will be the central focus in the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement for all courses, programs, and services.

    Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee Goal 2 – Identify accomplishments in using institutional outcomes at the course, program, and degree levels.

    Timeline for Objectives: December 2007
    • Define research methodology (i.e. representative samples, proper research questions, and the collection of good cumulative evidence.)
    • Implement outcomes, and gather evidence.
    • Disseminate results including qualitative and quantitative information about student learning outcomes.

    Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee Goal 3 -- Create a culture of assessment and a culture that supports institutional learning.

    Timeline for Objectives: December 2008
    • Re-evaluate the research methodology used
    • Conduct formative and summative evaluation and reevaluation (How the goals and objectives have been met).
    • Re-evaluate the goals for student learning outcomes
    • Use the results from student learning outcomes to improve learning, teaching, student services, and other college services.



    Student Learning Outcomes Plan

    As part of the college’s integrated planning process, the Student Learning Outcomes Steering Committee is developing a Student Learning Outcomes Component for the revised Master Plan. The Student Learning Outcomes Component of the Master Plan calls for, but is not limited, to the following:

    Identify the roles and responsibilities that different college departments, units, committees, and groups play in directly or indirectly supporting student learning, identify tasks, and timelines. Some of the groups may include the following:

    Planning Stage
    • Assess the campus culture, gather evidence, and increase the institutional capacity for dialogue.

    • Use the mission statement as an overarching guide to support student learning outcomes.
    • Identify Core Competencies for planned Student Learning Outcomes at the institutional level (e.g. Associate degree).

    • Develop venues for college-wide training regarding student learning outcomes.
      • Responsibilities = SLO Steering Committee, Faculty Senate Learning Assessment Committee, Curriculum Committee, SLO trainer

    Integration Stage
    • Reorientation of the college’s evaluation and planning, research, resource allocation, and decision-making processes.

    • Extend accomplishments in using Student Learning Outcomes to all courses, programs, and degrees.
      • Responsibilities = Managers, SLO Steering Committee, Department Chairs, and Classified

    • Develop research and analysis capacities that are meaningful, measure learning, and are understood by the campus community.
    • Develop strategies for disseminating and presenting the data about student learning outcomes so that individuals can understand the results of the institutional efforts and use these results for institutional improvement.
    • Develop a culture of assessment and a culture that supports institutional learning.
