Tiffany Lyons, second grade teacher
at Challenger Elementary School of Sports and Fitness
in Victorville, was honored this week as the Teacher
of the month in the Teachers are Heroes Program sponsored
by Victor Valley College, San Bernardino County Schools,
Clear Channel Radio, and Desert Community Bank.
In an essay prepared by Alexis Sanchez, a second grade
student of Ms. Lyons, she wrote, “I would like
to nominate my teacher for the Teachers Are Heroes Contest.
My teacher is the greatest! She is a rose with soft petals
but she can bring out her thorns when she needs to! She
is a brave and spiritual person by working hard for our
class. She is responsible and her teaching skills are
outstanding. She made all of our Bear Binders by hand
which took a lot of time! She is special because she
is blessed with a special gift-A KIND HEART.
I know why she deserves this award; she is a great mother
to her 6 children and still has patience for all of us.
She has a great sense of humor and is quite the giggle
box! There are many great teachers out there but I think
she is one of the greatest!!
Our class is like family to her; she takes time out of
her busy schedule to come to my non-school activities
and has even created her own web-site to keep our parents
informed and to allow her students to e-mail her with
any questions that there is no time to discuss during
class. She gives so much to me I would like to give something
back to her because this teacher is MY FRIEND AND MY
HERO!!!”
The
Teachers are Heroes Program honors one kindergarten
through 14 teacher every month out of the nearly 7,000
teachers in the High Desert. Teachers are selected
based on essays submitted to Clear Channel Radio
stations and
then reviewed by a panel of judges.
Honorees receive gift certificates for school supplies,
a recognition plaque, and special treats for the classroom.
At the end of the year, all twelve honorees and their
students will be invited to an annual celebration held
at Maverick Stadium.
“We are honoring teachers who go above and beyond, be it in the classroom,
the school, or the community,” said Lori Kildal, Ph.D., Dean of Instruction
at Victor Valley College.
Teacher nominations may be submitted in the form of 500 words-or-less essays
