Melissa Miller, fifth grade teacher at the Galileo Academy was honored by the “Teachers are Heroes” program for her outstanding work with students in the Victor Valley .
An essay, submitted by J'Amy Pacheco a student in her class, began with a statement that identified Mrs. Miller as a person that teaches her students to be responsible students who care about the community and the environment. The essay went on to point out that everyone in her class has volunteered to do community service.
Miss Pacheco wrote, “Last summer my teacher spent her own money to do community service in the Galapagos Islands which is a very poor place. She is going back next summer and bringing more teachers with her.”
We have to work very hard, but she is fair and kind and understanding. She gives us chances to do things that many kids don't get to do like teaching kindergartners to read and designing our own playground.
She is very healthy and a vegetarian and she has us exercise every single day unless the track is flooded. That is very good for kids. A few weeks ago she climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes which is like 60 stories high. Some of us (like me) didn't make it all the way up but she set a good example and made me want to try again.
When I had to go on the radio for my community service project she came with me even though she was almost as scared as I was. She is an awesome teacher and a wonderful human being and I hope you pick her!!!
The Teachers are Heroes Program honors one kindergarten
through 14 teacher every month out of the nearly 7,000
teachers in the High Desert. Teachers are selected
based on essays submitted to Clear Channel Radio
stations and
then reviewed by a panel of judges.
Honorees receive gift certificates for school supplies,
a recognition plaque, and special treats for the classroom.
At the end of the year, all twelve honorees and their
students will be invited to an annual celebration held
at Maverick Stadium.
“We are honoring teachers who go above and beyond, be it in the classroom,
the school, or the community,” said Lori Kildal, Ph.D., Dean of Instruction
at Victor Valley College.
