Linda Hoover, science and math teacher at Riverview Middle School in Helendale, was selected from among a multitude of nominations submitted by students, teachers, administrators, and school volunteers as the newest honored teacher by the community-wide “Teachers are Heroes” Program.
The nomination, written by a student, began by saying, “Mrs. Hoover is my hero because she made me feel welcomed and loved when I first got to the school. I was a new student there.”
The student nomination noted that Mrs. Hoover is the type of teacher that is willing to go out of her way to help students understand a problem in class as well as to help students with problems not connected to the classroom. “I have found a new love of math and science because she brings energy to those classes. She makes everybody understand and want to learn, even those kids that do not want to be in school. She is tough when it comes to grades and turning in homework on time, but that is only because she wants us to be responsible adults later in life. I have the deepest respect for my teacher because, out of all the schools that I have been to (my dad being in the army), she has given me the most confidence and believed in me the most. This is why she is my hero and should be selected for this honor,” the student wrote.
The Teachers are Heroes Program honors one kindergarten
through 14 teacher every month out of the nearly 7,000
teachers in the High Desert. Teachers are selected
based on essays submitted to Clear Channel Radio
stations and
then reviewed by a panel of judges.
Honorees receive gift certificates for school supplies,
a recognition plaque, and special treats for the classroom.
At the end of the year, all twelve honorees and their
students will be invited to an annual celebration held
at Maverick Stadium.
“We are honoring teachers who go above and beyond, be it in the classroom,
the school, or the community,” said Lori Kildal, Ph.D., Dean of Instruction
at Victor Valley College.
