The largest number
of nursing students in the history of the school (200)
gathered this week
for orientation at Victor Valley College. The previous
number of first through fourth semester students was
estimated at 154 participants. Enrollment has substantially
increased this year due to a special program funded by
Desert Valley and St. Mary Hospitals. The program titled “Evening/Weekend
Nursing Program” opened the opportunity for 20
additional nursing students to enroll and will provide
funding for fees and scholarships to be paid each semester
during the two year program.
The orientation included representatives from all four
high desert hospitals (Barstow, Desert Valley, SMMC and
VVCH). The program was prepared by the college Nursing
Department in an effort to welcome students, introduce
the program, outline expectations, and familiarize everyone
to the clinical aspect of the program.
The published agenda included;
Patient Confidentiality, Patients Right’s and
Responsibilities, Hospital Emergency Codes, and General
Hospital Safety.
These and other topics were structured to help the nursing
students know about hospital policies and procedures
and to understand what is expected of them when they
begin their work at the hospitals.
