ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) is the study of English for people whose native language is not English. The following courses are intended to develop language skills necessary for success at the college level. In addition to the courses listed below, several beginning-level non-credit courses are listed in the “Non-credit Classes” section.
To determine their level of English, new students who have already learned some English should take an ESL placement test before they register for classes.
El inglés como una Segunda Lengua (ESL) es el estudio de Enlish para aquellos la cuya lengua materna no es el inglés. La seguida de cursos es querida para desarrollar habilidades de lengua necesarias para el éxito en los cursos académicos o profesionales. Además de los cursos puestos en una lista debajo, también ofrecen a estos cursos sobre una base de no-crédito. Las clases de no-crédito son puestas en una lista detrás de la lista(del programa) bajo. ESL 12A Basic Computer Literacy 3.0 units
Pass/No Pass. This is a three part course in ESL Computer Literacy for non-native speakers of English. The focus of the course is to develop language skills related to computer usage. Students will learn computer uses for ESL courses and educational purposes. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Crédito/No Crédito. Este es un curso de tres partes en ESL y el conocimiento de computadora para extranjeros que no hablan inglés. El enfoque del curso es el desarrollo de habilidades de lenguaje relacionadas al uso de la computadora. Los estudiantes aprenderán usos computadorizados para los cursos de ESL y con miras a la educación. Este curso no se aplicará para el grado de Asociado en las Artes.

Pass/No Pass. Recommended preparation: Completion of ESL 12A strongly recommended. This course is designed for non-native speakers of English. The focus of the course is to expand and develop basic computer knowledge for ESL educational purposes. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.

ESL 23 Pre-Intermediate Reading 2.0 units
and Vocabulary
Credit/No Credit. This course focuses on development and practice of fundamental reading and vocabulary skills needed to prepare students who plan to continue their post-secondary education. Reading skills include understanding new vocabulary in context and scanning for specific information. Students read simplified texts on academic and vocational subjects. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Crédito/No Crédito. Este curso se enfoca en el desarrollo y práctica de los fundamentos de la lectura y habilidades de vocabulario necesarias para preparar estudiantes que planean continuar su educación superior. Habilidades de la lectura incluye la comprensión, nuevo vocabulario en contexto y buscar información especifica. Los estudiantes leen textos simplificados en materias académicas y vocacionales. ESL 25 Pre-Intermediate Listening & Speaking 3.0 units
Pass/No Pass. Course is designed for non-native speakers of English. This course focuses on fundamental speaking and listening skills for ESL students who have a basic knowledge of common English words and phrases. Students learn to understand short spoken passages, including questions and warnings. Speaking skills include describing familiar situations and events, such as giving basic information on the telephone. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Crédito/No Crédito. Este curso se enfoca en los fundamentos de las habilidades del hablar y el escuchar para estudiantes de ESL que tienen un conocimiento básico de palabras y frases communes del inglés. Los estudiantes aprenderán a entender pasajes cortos hablados, incluyendo preguntas y advertencias. ESL 30A Intermediate Pronunciation I 3.0 units
Pass/No Pass. Recommended preparation: Successful completion of ESL 12A is strongly recommended. This course is designed for non-native speakers of English who require practice and instruction in pronunciation. Focus is on improving communication skills and achieving clear speech. This class will focus on introducing sounds of vowels and consonants and their combinations. It will introduce the basic features of English pronunciation. Emphasis is on oral fluency and individual accuracy. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Crédito/No Crédito. Esta es la primera de una serie de dos partes de cursos intermedios de Pronunciación. Pass/No Pass. This course is designed for non-native speakers of English at the high intermediate and/or advanced level of ESL. Designed for students whose speech is continuing to cause communication problems at work, school, or in social situations. Students practice listening, rhythm, intonation, and pronunciation. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Crédito/No Crédito. Esta es la Segunda parte de la serie de dos cursos de nivel intermedio de pronunciación. El curso está diseñado para estudiantes intermedio-bajo a quienes el lenguaje les está causando dificultades de comunicación en el trabajo la escuela o en situaciones sociales. ESL 33 Low Intermediate Reading 3.0 units
and Vocabulary
A reading course for low intermediate ESL students emphasizing main ideas, outlining, and vocabulary in context. Students should already have basic skills in decoding information and understanding at a literal level. They should be able to read and understand short, authentic texts such as letters and instructions. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
Un curso de lectura para estudiantes de ESL intermedio bajo que enfatiza las ideas principales y generales y el vocabulario en contexto. Los estudiantes deberían tener ya capacidades básicas en el descifre de información y entendimiento a un nivel literal. at the Workplace
Pass/No Pass. This class is designed for non-native speakers of English who wish to strengthen business communication skills. Course focus is on cultural differences, social etiquette, business idioms, and some business writing. Emphasis on developing fluency and comprehension. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.

Students learn common courtesy expressions, clarification strategies, idiomatic expressions, and grammatical patterns in English. This course will not apply to the Associate Degree.
