Associate in Arts in English for Transfer Degree

 

1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives

This degree is designed for students who wish to transfer to a California State University to complete a bachelor's degree in English or a related field.  All of the courses in the degree plan will prepare students for a baccalaureate degree in English or a related field. 

The VVC English Department has the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):

Read Critically - analyze texts (such as non-fiction, fiction, drama, and poetry) within the conventions of genre, language, and rhetorical devices; read college-level texts for main points and supporting material; understand rhetorical strategies used in college-level texts.

Think Critically - analyze a variety of sources for purpose, content, and style; evaluate source material for reliability; select and synthesize source material to support an argument. 

Write Effectively - produce a variety of college-level writing projects which demonstrate an understanding of purpose, audience, coherence, clarity, and style; assemble and synthesize diverse ideas from textual sources to create a unified essay, project, or oral presentation; assess, revise, and edit writing projects to meet the conventions of academic discourse. 

 

2. Catalog Description

Students completing an Associate in Arts in English for Transfer degree will be prepared to transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in English or similar major. Upon completion of this degree, students will be able to read critically and analyze a variety of college level texts (such as non-fiction, fiction, drama, and poetry) within the conventions of language, genre, and rhetoric; analyze, evaluate, synthesize and document a variety of sources to support written arguments; draft, revise, and submit an effective essay, project, or oral presentation with attention to purpose, coherence, voice, language, and mechanical conventions. 

 

3. Program Requirements

To obtain the Associate in Arts Degree in English for Transfer, students must complete the following requirements with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0:

  • The English major requirements below
  • The California State University General Education – Breadth (CSUGE) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirements
  • Any needed transferable electives to reach a total of 60 CSU transferable units
