INFORMATION

 

What is a Court Reporter?   

Court Reporters use a stenotype machine to record verbatim notes of court proceedings, depositions, hearings, and meetings.
 

What does the course look like?

Court Reporting speed courses are self-paced, challenging, and require self-discipline and a high degree of motivation. This is a 2-3 year course depending on your level of speed achieved to pass the state written and machine test.

 

What is the salary and benefits of a Court Reporter?   

Salaries for a Court Reporter begin at $100,000+ depending on the field.
Benefits usually include 4 weeks paid vacation, 14 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and pension plans.

 

What type of career opportunities are available to Court Reporters  

  • Official/Pro Tempore Reporters- Create a verbatim record in state and federal courts.
  • Deposition Court Reporters-Report depositions in legal offices or via zoom.
  • Hearing Reporter- Report hearings such as worker's compensation board hearings.
  • Live Television Captioners- Provide live captions for news and sports.
  • CART Reporters- Reports in college and high school classrooms for the deaf and/or hard of hearing students.

 

Requirements

High School Diploma
45 WPM typing certificate (typing test available in building 42 room 1)
No felonies
