Administration of Justice
Program Description:
The Administration of Justice program is designed to develop a student's understanding of the various operational functions within the criminal justice system. The educational emphasis is the examination of crime causation, functions of law enforcement, criminal court system, and corrections. Students majoring in this subject area can prepare themselves for careers in law enforcement, corrections, and security at both the operational and administrative levels.
All areas of Administration of Justice require that individuals possess the personal and physical qualities essential to effective peace officers. Many employment opportunities currently exist for individuals desiring entrance into law enforcement or related fields at various governmental levels. Security and corrections are fast-growing professions. Individuals interested in these professions should understand that the work is demanding, requiring a combination of training, education and experience along with mental and physical stamina.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Program Description:
The EMS programs offer an assortment of courses in various health interest / pubic safety areas. EMS is comprised of three disciplines: Paramedic,Emergency Medical Technician & Emergency Medical Responder.
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course is intended for those desiring a level of readiness to assist the community during times of disaster, as well as personal preparedness. This course (EMS 50) is a 2.5 unit class that has no age minimum prerequisite and also includes the American Heart Association - Healthcare Provider CPR course as well as other lifesaving skills. This course is well-designed for high-school students that do not yet meet the age minimum for EMT. The Emergency Medical Responder program is approved / accredited by the Inland Counties Emergency Medical Services Agency (ICEMA).
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the beginning level for response personnel. Prerequisites include: 18 years of age before the first day of class & must have a valid / current American Heart Association (AHA) - CPR for Healthcare Provider card. Emergency Medical Technician is the minimum preparation required to work on an Ambulance, for a Fire Department and many other Public Safety positions. This course (EMS 60) is a rigorous 9 unit class that is also a prerequisite for entrance into the Fire Academy, as well as the Paramedic Program (see Paramedic webpage for further details and specifics). A course completion certificate is awarded at the successful conclusion of the class and also includes the National Registry of EMT skills testing. Successful students are eligible to take their NREMT written exam after course completion. Also offered is the EMT-Refresher course. This course (EMS 61) is a 1 unit class designed to fulfill the 24 hours of Continuing Education required for recertification of current EMT's - includes all CA State Skills testing. The Emergency Medical Technician & Refresher program is approved / accredited by the Inland Counties Emergency Medical Services Agency (ICEMA).
The Paramedic (EMT-P) program is the most advanced level of pre-hospital training for the Emergency Medical Services. This rigorous, part-time program is a one-year, 7 course (EMS 80-86) progressive curriculum that encompasses 40.5 units of study that includes lecture, lab and clinical / field externships. This technologically advanced program adheres to the National Education Standards, as well as State and LEMSA standards for Paramedic and may be eligible for an A.S. degree award for those students that meet the requirements for graduation (see catalog for details - appointment with Counseling is recommended for those incoming students that might wish to apply). Prerequisites include - but are not limited to - at least 6 months (full-time) or 1000 hours (part-time) documented experience as an EMT. The paramedic program of Victor Valley College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
Fire Technology
Program Description:
The Fire Technology Department at Victor Valley College provides training and educational opportunities for students to become eligible for employment as a part-time firefighter with a local agency, a seasonal firefighter with the United States Forest Service, a full-time firefighter with the California Department of Forestry, or a full-time firefighter with any municipal fire department in California and many states in the western United States.
Victor Valley College is accredited as a Regional Training Facility through the State Fire Marshal's office and offers accredited courses that meet the professional standards required by the California State Fire Marshal's Office. Students must complete each of these courses with a passing score of 70 percent or better, and in some cases 80 percent or better to earn certificates that many employers require for consideration for employment.
The program provides classes to students who are seeking an opportunity for a career in the fire service as well as career development for firefighters who are looking for advancement to company officer, fire prevention specialist and chief officer positions.
The department provides a series of classes that will give entry-level students the basic skills and abilities to pass the required employment examinations for a paid call firefighter position with any of the local agencies.
Several classes also prepare the student for entry into the Firefighter I Academy, and eight-week, 360-hour rigorous course of study that will, when successfully completed, earn the student a certificate from a certified training academy that they meet the professional standards for entry-level firefighters.
