VVC Rams Football Set Milestones in 2014
Hoover Coach of the Year
DAVID HOOVER-COACH OF THE YEAR
The Southern California Football Association (SCFA) has announced that David Hoover was the American Mountain Conference Coach of the Year for the 2014 season. His 2014 Rams finished their season with a number one ranking in Southern California’s American Division and number eight in the final CCCAA polls. These are the best in the 53 year history of Victor Valley College. Hoover’s Rams also broke into the national rankings in 2014 finishing ranked 32nd among all junior college football programs in the country. “This is the best overall team I have ever had in my career; I thank everyone who made it possible, the players, coaches, the college and our entire community”. It was the second time hoover has received this honor in his tenure at Victor Valley College.
PAUL MROZ-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Paul Mroz (SO) from Champion High School in Boston, Massachusetts. The Ram signal caller finished the season with 156 for 288 (54%) completion rate for 2434 yards and 19 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Mroz stated, “It was great to in a program that worked as hard as we did here. It is a special team I was a part of and the first time I have never been undefeated as a player. We had an outstanding offensive line that protected me all year and some special receivers on our offense that made some unbelievable receptions. I am thankful for the award but could not do it without the other great players I played with on our offense this year”.
RAMS PLACE TWELVE ON ALL CONFERENCE TEAM
EVAN ROBINSON (Victor Valley High School, Victorville, CA)—Sophomore Offensive Guard, Robinson started all 20 games of his career for the Rams and was one of the most physical offensive lineman in California. “I am thankful for this honor and choosing VVC to attend college, it is a great school with exceptional football coaches that care about everything we do”.
DOUGLAS SUBTYL (Flagaster Palms High School, Orlando, FL)-Freshman Defensive End that was arguably the most dominate defensive lineman in all of junior college football. Subtyl finished with the season with 76 tackles, 15 tackles for loss; 12 quarterback sacks and an impressive 44 quarterback hurries. Defensive Line coach Herman Smith said “he could be the best defensive lineman I have ever coached, not one offensive tackle could block him consistently all year, and he is a great student and well deserving of this honor”.
SHAWN WILLIAMS (Riverview High School, Dallas, TX) Freshman “power” running back averaged 84 yards per game in a conference in which three running backs rushed for over 1000 yards. Williams took control of games in the fourth quarter and was a tough load to bring down for defenders. Running Back coach Mike Hoover stated “ he is an old school back that runs north and south and that’s what we love about Shawn”.
MELVIN ROBINSON (Rancho High School, Las Vegas, NV) Sophomore Linebacker Melvin Robinson was the “backbone” of the states # 2 ranked defense. Robinson finished with 72 tackles on the season in which 14 of those tackles were for losses. Robinson stated “ I am grateful for this award and had a great time; Coach Esposito taught me every week on what to expect and where to be and made the season a lot of fun, our entire defense was unbelievable and played hard every snap”.
JAMES LIKER (Silver Valley High School, Yermo, CA) The freshman kicker was another unanimous all conference pick. James was the second ranked place kicker in the state as a freshman. Special Teams Coordinator Jonathan Cervantes stated “James was a huge part of our success kicking two game winning field goals on the last plays of games as a freshman as well as a four field goal performance twice, and in one of those games proved to also be the game winners, we may never see a kicker as consistent as James again, he is very special”.
DEE BOWLER (Virgin Valley High School, Mesquite, NV)-Freshman Linebacker Dee Bowler was a unanimous pick for this honor. Bowler’s 75 tackles was among the conference’s best and seemed to always make a play that sunk the offensive momentum in every game. Esposito commented, “Dee is always around the football and is an inspiration to all linebackers in terms of why you should never take a play off, he literally beat offensive schemes because of his ability to get to the football play after play”.
JAY KNOWLES (Torrance High School, Pasadena, CA)-Freshman Cornerback from Torrance High School in Los Angeles. “Jay was an intimidating force for all receivers and quarterbacks this past season, he is 6’3 and can run and break on the football” defensive back coach Bobby Godinez stated. Knowles finished the season with 36 tackles and 19 pass break ups and two interceptions.
DOMINIQUE WILLIAMS (Mountain High School, Hampton, VA)-Sophomore Safety Dominique Williams was the surgeon of the state’s top ranked defense. Williams finished the 2014 campaign with 43 tackles and played every snap the Ram defense took in 2014. Williams also had 12 pass breakups and 2 interceptions for touchdowns. Head Coach David Hoover stated, “Dominique is a true leader on and off the field, our defensive captain is the epitome of what a college football player should be”.
FABIAN LEOS (Canyon Springs High School, Las Vegas, NV )-The sophomore center from Nevada is a second time pick to the American Mountain Conference team. Leos averaged 12 pancake blocks per game and was a tremendous leader of the offensive line. Head Coach David hoover stated “Leos is by far the best center in the history of Victor valley College”.
KENTABIUS TRAYLOR (Canyon Springs High School, Las Vegas, NV)—The 6’4” 290 pound sophomore offensive tackle did not give up a sack the entire season and was a physical force for the Rams offense. VVC offensive line coach Eric Wilkinson added “we were able to do a variety of schemes because of Kentabius’ excellent feet”.
DEVONTE MILLIGAN (Virgin Valley High School, Mesquite, NV) Freshman Wide Receiver finished the season with 33 receptions for 500 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging and impressive 15.2 yards per reception. Wide Receiver Coach Charles Welde commented, “ Devonte is a hard worker and is well deserving of this, he made 18 receptions that were all third down conversions for our offense, he was amazing”.
TREVOSIER MITCHELL (West Laurens High School, Dexter, GA)-The Georgia Southern transfer Linebacker finished with 59 tackles and 12 for losses. “We designed this defense around speed and Trevosier was always hurrying quarterbacks and punishing the state’s top running games week in and week out”, Esposito stated.
