  • VVC Football Player - Jimmy Musgrave - signs with UTEP

    February 19, 2014

photo of Jimmy Musgrave and his parentsAfter spending two seasons as a walk-on football player at the University of Oregon, Silverado graduate Jimmy Musgrave returned to the High Desert to play as a linebacker for Victor Valley College this season.

The decision turned into a full-ride scholarship to another NCAA Division I program.

On Thursday, Musgrave signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Texas at El Paso.

"Jimmy Musgrave is a self-made man," VVC coach Dave Hoover said. "He has an incredible work ethic and a 4.0 grade point average. The day he walked onto campus, he was ready to work and play football."

Musgrave said he will have a good chance to start at middle linebacker next year as a junior for a program that competes in Conference USA. He’s enrolling at UTEP in January.

The Miners went 2-10 in head coach Sean Kugler’s first season. Musgrave said he likes what Kugler is doing.

"It’s something I want to be part of," Musgrave said.

Musgrave, who was the Daily Press Football Defense Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2011, made the University of Oregon football team as walk on after high school. He redshirted that first year and then switched to H-back the next season. Musgrave returned to the High Desert after that season.

"(Hoover) wanted me after high school," Musgrave said. "I knew it was the type of program ... that would get the best out of me and prepare me for the next level."

Musgrave was one of four all-state players from Victor Valley College this season along with Charles Taylor, Charles Mouton and Kyle Keplinger. Musgrave had 95 tackles, 15 1/2 tackles for loss and eight sacks for the Rams, who went 6-4 this season.
