Send the Director an email »
The department consists of five divisions; (1) Maintenance, (2) Grounds, (3) Custodial, (4) Warehouse, and (5) Recycling.
The Maintenance Division is responsible for repairing and renovating over 500,000 square feet of buildings, including classrooms, offices, conference rooms, public areas, and restrooms. In addition they maintain parking lots, sidewalks, water & sewer mains, and anything else that’s mechanical. There is also an auto mechanic that maintains all of the college vehicles, golf carts, electric vehicles, and the grounds equipment.
The Grounds Division is responsible for the care and maintenance of the 250 acre parcel of land that the college sits on. Over 100 acres are planted with some sort of grass or vegetation that requires regular care. In addition to mowing the grass and trimming trees & shrubs, the Grounds division also maintains the irrigation systems, stripes the athletic fields, preps the softball and baseball fields for practice and play, maintains 3 Little League fields just like our fields, and spends hours and hours picking weeds.
The Custodial Division is responsible for cleaning over 470,000 square feet of offices, classrooms, and common areas each day. There is a day shift which works from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm and a graveyard shift that works from 10:00 pm to 6:30 am. The day shift works around the campus completing specific duties as well as servicing all of the restrooms to make sure that they are clean and stocked. The graveyard custodians are each assigned to a specific area for a period of six months. Each area is approximately 39,000 square feet. That’s the equivalent of cleaning 26 average sized homes in a 7 ½ hour period. The graveyard shift empties the trash, cleans the restrooms, vacuums the carpets, mops tile floors, cleans the walls, set up for large events, and many more incidental tasks.
The Warehouse Division is responsible for most of the shipping and receiving responsibilities for the college. They are also responsible for picking up and delivering the mail, supplying paper to various offices, maintaining the fixed asset inventory, monitoring the records retention program, delivering packages to various departments and employees, assisting the Maintenance personnel in moving people and setting up offices, maintaining the used furniture inventory and delivering furniture as requested, and picking up parts and supplies off campus that are time critical for M & O operations.
The Recycling Division is responsible for the collection and redemption of recyclable materials, student and employee awareness programs about the program, and supporting the collection infrastructure. The Recycling Technician performs scheduled pick ups on a weekly basis in every campus building, as well as the blue recycling containers throughout the campus. The Recycling Technician is responsible for sorting all of the collected materials, baling the cardboard and mixed paper, and transporting everything to the redemption centers.
The administrative office for the department is located in building 93 behind the Vocational Education complex. The office is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday. The office staff is responsible for processing work orders, dispatching the correct trade for emergencies, issuing keys and proximity cards, issuing rental vehicles for staff and student transportation, and contacting vendors for contracted services. Requests for services, such as keys or vehicles, that are outside of the normal hours of operation can be made at least 24 hours in advance, and will be accommodated on a personnel availability basis.
