The field of pre hospital care is an exciting extension of the medical profession. The Emergency Medical Technician is the beginning level for response personnel. Emergency Medical Technician is the minimum preparation required to staff an ambulance. This course is also required for students desiring to become a Paramedic.

PREREQUISITES

High school diploma or GED. Student must be 18 years of age to be certified. Prior education in anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, is recommended, but not required. Current Healthcare Provider CPR Card is required. Current, negative tuberculosis test is also required. Felony convictions and some driving violations may prevent student from being certified.

CLASS OVERVIEW

The Emergency Medical Technician course is an intensive 16 (or 6) week (Fall and Spring Semesters) or 6-Week (Summer and Winter Sessions) course that will provide the students training in the recognition of the signs and symptoms of illness and traumatic injuries. The course will consist of classroom lectures, manipulative skills in a lab setting, and clinical internships. The internships require a minimum of two (2) twelve-hour shifts in a local emergency room and two (2) twelve-hour shifts on a transport ambulance.

This program is intended as an introductory course to provide the student with basic skills and knowledge required to go on to Paramedic training.

The EMT course includes 100 hours of classroom instruction as well as 36 hours of lab (skills) instruction. Student will also be required to complete 32 hours of field and clinical internship. A minimum score of 80% is required on the testing portion of this class. There are no exceptions.

This class meets EMSA regulations and upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible for certification as an EMT Basic, and are able to register for the National Registry examination.
