Spanish Course Descriptions
Spanish
1 - Elementary Spanish, 5 units
(Course will be taught Online in the near
future)
This course provides
an introduction to the Spanish language and the cultures of its speakers.
Fundamentals of pronunciation, structure and Hispanic culture are
studied to develop the ability to use and understand basic spoken
and written Spanish. Special emphasis is given to development
of oral and aural skills by use of the language lab.Five lecture hours
and one lab hour per week. CSU, UC. (No prerequisite.)
Spanish
1A - Fundamentals of Spanish 1A, 3 units
This course provides
an introduction to the Spanish language and culture. Fundamentals
of pronunciation, structure and Hispanic culture are studied.
Special emphasis is given to development of oral and aural skills.
Spanish 1A and 1 B must be taken to get credit for Spanish 1.
Upon completion of Spanish 1A and 1B, CSU will only accept five units
for transfer. Three lecture hours and one lab hour per week.
CSU (No prerequisite.)
NOTE: This course will first be offered in Fall 2003.

1B - Fundamentals of Spanish 1B, 3 units
This course is
a continuation of Spanish 1A. It provides an introduction to
the Spanish language and culture. Fundamentals of pronunciation,
structure and Hispanic culture are studied. Special emphasis
is given to development of oral and aural skills. Spanish 1A
and 1 B must be taken to get credit for Spanish 1. Upon completion
of Spanish 1A and 1B, CSU will only accept five units for transfer.
Three
lecture hours and one lab hour per week. CSU (Prerequisite:
Completion of Spanish 1B with a grade of "C" or better.)

This course is
a continuation of Spanish 1. Further study of fundamentals of
pronunciation, structure and Hispanic culture are studied to develop
the ability to use and understand basic spoken and written Spanish.
Use of language laboratory is required in order to continue the development
of oral and aural skills. Five lecture hours and one lab hour per
week. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish 1,
or Spanish

3 - Intermediate Spanish, 3 units
A
comprehensive review of the basic grammatical structure of Spanish,
vocabulary building, development of conversation and composition
skills, reading of simple literary texts and articles of social
interest.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite:
Completion of Spanish 2 or two years of high school Spanish.)
Spanish 4 - Intermediate Spanish, 3 units
A
continuation of a comprehensive review of the basic grammatical
structure of Spanish, vocabulary building, development of conversation
and composition skills, reading of simple literary texts and articles
of social interest.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite:
Completion of Spanish 3 or three years of high school Spanish.)

10 - Spanish for Spanish Speakers, 3 units
(Course will be taught Online in the near future)
Designed
to fulfill the particular needs of bilingual students with special
emphasis on the grammar of the language and the development of writing,
reading and speaking. Conducted in Spanish.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU, UC. (Recommended
preparation: Speaking ability in Spanish.)

25 - Conversational Spanish I, 3 units
This
is the first of two courses covering the essentials of Spanish conversation
with the objective if developing fluency in oral communication using
situations the student will commonly encounter. Introduction
to simple Spanish structures and grammar with emphasis on the spoken
language.
Three
lecture hours per week. CSU. (No prerequisite.)
Spanish
26 - Conversational Spanish II, 3 units
This
is the second of two courses covering the essentials of Spanish
conversation. Intensive oral and aural practice in the language
with the objectives of developing fluency and increasing vocabulary
through the study of common cross-cultural situations. Introduction
to more complex Spanish structure and grammar with emphasis on the
spoken language.
Three
lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: Conversational
Spanish 25 or the ability to speak Spanish with a level of fluency
equivalent to completion of Spanish 25 or with the consent of the
instructor.

Spanish
28A - Spanish for Child Development, 3 units
An
introduction to the Spanish language using situations the early
childhood educator will commonly encounter. Introduction to
simple Spanish structures and grammar with an emphasis on the spoken
language and a bilingual/bicultural approach to early childhood
education.

30-Conversational Spanish for Healthcare Professionals I, 3 units
This
course provides basic conversational skills for nursing and healthcare
students, as well as other medical and hospital personnel, who must
communicate quickly and effectively with Spanish-speaking patients.
Conducted in Spanish and in English.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU (No prerequisite.)
Spanish
31 - Conversational Spanish for Healthcare Professionals II, 3 units
This
course is a continuation of Spanish 30. It provides intermediate
conversational skills for nursing and healthcare students, as well
as other medical and hospital personnel, who must communicate quickly
and effectively with Spanish-speaking patients. Conducted
in Spanish and in English.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU Prerequisite:
Spanish 30 with a grade of "C" or higher or consent of
instructor.

35 - Spanish for Business, 3 units
(Course is also taught Online)
This
course is designed to give students a foundation in Spanish business
terminology and prepare them with the knowledge necessary to function
in business and professional settings in Spanish speaking countries
and where is Spanish is used in the U.S. Emphasis will be
placed on acquiring basic communication skills and specialized vocabulary
on topics related to business and finance. Course is conducted
mainly in Spanish.
Three lecture hours per week. CSU (Prerequisite: Ability
to speak Spanish recommended.)
