--The
future looks bright for the women's tennis program
at Victor Valley College. Marites Killion has
taken over the head coaching duties for a squad
that did not win a team match or an individual
set in 2000-01, and while the Rams haven't yet
recorded a team victory this season, there are
several reasons to believe that success isn't
far away.
The Rams have opened the season
with an 0-6 record overall and an 0-4 mark in
the Foothill Conference, but the dubious distinction
of being shutout every match is long gone.
Irina Solovey has led the way with a 4-4 individual
mark in conference play, and Shetera Mundy has
a 3-6 conference mark.
"I do expect at least one
win within the conference," said Killion. "The
girls that I have are very aggressive on the court.
I expect for the team to thoroughly love tennis
so that they come back next year." --Geoff

year
of competition after a 30 year absence.
The team's standout player
right now is Rabb Aliyee, who has set a personal
record in the triple jump. The women's team has
made an immense improvement this year. One woman
in particular, Coral Perkins, has shown the most
improvement so far.
The team as a whole has shown
steady improvement throughout the year. The team
has about five more athletes than last year and
is much stronger than previous teams, said Assistant
Coach Jeff Box. --Amber
