Emergency Medical Technician

The field of pre hospital care is an exciting extension of the medical profession. The Emergency Medical Technician is the beginning level for response personnel. Emergency Medical Technician is the minimum preparation required to work on an Ambulance, for a Fire Department and many other Public Safety positions. This course is also required for students desiring to become a Paramedic and / or Firefighter and is a prerequisite for the Basic Fire Academy.

PREREQUISITES

Student must be 18 years of age by the first day of classes. Prior education in anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, is recommended, but not required. Current American Heart Association, BLS CPR certification is required. Current, negative tuberculosis test is also required, but not required until prior to clinical / field. Felony convictions and some driving violations may prevent student from being certified (see below).

MANDATORY BACKGROUND REQUIREMENT

Each student will be required to submit to a criminal background verification prior to attending clinical or field shifts. Information of how to complete this process will be provided to the students during the early stages of the class and can only be done through the program-approved vendor. No outside, non-approved vendors or processes will be accepted. Failure to complete this requirement by the specified date will be grounds for dismissal from the class. Failure of the background check may be grounds for dismissal and / or subject to review by the instructor, EMS Department Director, Emergency Medical Services Chairperson, Dean of Public Safety and the clinical / field sites.

Information reported will be: County Criminal, Nationwide Sex Offender database, Nationwide Healthcare Fraud / Office of Inspector General Sanctions, Social Security alerts, County of Residence and employment (7 years) and a Department of Motor Vehicle report.

The results are reported directly to the EMS Program Director and / or their designee.

Decisions for immediate removal will be determined by California Health and Safety Code of Regulations, Title 22-Social Security, Division 9-Prehospital Emergency Medical Services, Chapter 6-Process for EMT and Advanced EMT Disciplinary Action, Article 4-Determination and Notification of Action, Section #100214.3-Denial or Revocation of a Certificate, (c) (1-9) and (d) (1-2).

CLASS OVERVIEW

The Emergency Medical Technician course is an intensive 16, 8 or 6-Week course - depending on semester and time of year - that will provide the students training in the recognition of the signs and symptoms of illness and traumatic injuries, as well as perform life-saving skills.. The course will consist of classroom lectures, online, hybrid content, manipulative skills in a lab setting, and clinical internships. The internships require a total of 24 hours of shifts in a local emergency room and / or on a transport ambulance. Schedule of shifts will be determined by the faculty and staff and made available to the students during the class to accommodate your schedule outside of class meeting times.

This program is intended as an introductory course to provide the student with basic skills and knowledge required to go on to Paramedic training.

The EMT course includes 135 hours of classroom / hybrid instruction as well as 81 hours of lab instruction, including field and clinical internship. A minimum score of 80% is required on the final written exam as well as a 100% pass rate on all EMT skills for successful completion of this class. There are no exceptions.

This class meets California EMSA regulations and is approved by the Local EMSA (Inland Counties EMS Agency). Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to register for the National Registry licensing examination.
