Our Mission and Philosophy

In keeping with the mission, philosophy and goals of Victor Valley College, the Medical Assisting program strives to educate and prepare competent, entry-level, responsible and caring medical assistants to be valued members of the health care team.  In addition, the program fosters professionalism, integrity, responsibility, and lifelong learning.

We strive to . . .

  • Instill professional values that encourages students to conform to the ethical and legal standards of medical practice and to pursue continuing education.
  • Provide students with a competency based education in Medical Assisting that will enhance their critical thinking skills to enable the student to function effectively in both the administrative and clinical aspects of the medical office.
  • Prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive, psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
  • Have every single student take, and pass, the American Association of Medical Assistant’s certification exam to become certified medical assistants.

Medical Assisting is a multi-skilled allied health profession; practitioners work primarily in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics.  Medical assistants function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures under supervision of a physician or licensed practitioner.

Administrative duties include scheduling and receiving patients, preparing and maintaining medical records, performing basic secretarial skills, medical transcription, handling telephone calls and writing correspondence, serving as a liaison between the physician and other individuals, and managing practice finances.

Clinical duties include asepsis and infection control, taking patient histories and vital signs, performing first aid and CPR, preparing patients for procedures, assisting the physician with examinations and treatments, collecting and processing specimens, performing selected diagnostic tests and preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician.
