Dual Enrollment Mission Statement
The mission of the Dual Enrollment Program at Victor Valley College is to build partnerships with local high school districts that develop a thriving culture, based upon student success, for both mainstream and underrepresented students alike. Allowing students to be involved in a college experience while in high school places them in a prime position to develop and advance academically, while earning both high school and college credit.
How is Dual Enrollment Defined?
Dual Enrollment offers high school students the opportunity to enroll in college courses and receive college credit while pursuing their high school diploma. Courses are offered in a variety of disciplines and fields including general education and career pathway courses that align with local industry. Students can take these courses at the high school or at the college depending on the agreement between the high school district and the college district. All course fees are waived, saving money for the student, while preparing them for the rigor of college.
- Dual Enrollment: College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP)
Assembly Bill No. 288 = Establishes the College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) partnerships whereby governing boards of a community college district and high school district can enter into an agreement to expand the enrollment of special-admit students for preparation to transfer or career technical education.
The purpose of CCAP is to extend the opportunity to students, that may not be college bound or who are underrepresented in higher education, to take college level courses in the high school setting completely FREE of any fees including the textbook.
The goal of CCAP is to develop seamless pathways from high school to community college:
- For Career Technical Education (CTE) or transfer preparation.
- To improve high school graduation rates, or
- To help high school students achieve college and career readiness.
- Dual Enrollment: Non-CCAP
Establishes the partnership between a community college district and a high school district where students can attend college level courses at the community college.
The purpose of these partnerships is to provide advanced scholastic and vocational course work to students who are determined to be ready to undertake college credit coursework. These students will be required to pay the Student Center Fee, the Transportation Fee, and books.
The goal of these partnerships is to provide opportunities to eligible K12 students to benefit from advanced scholastic and vocational course work.
Why is Victor Valley College Partnering with High Schools?
Many students in the Victor Valley College service area do not see themselves as college bound. These students need a positive experience with college level work in order for them to build confidence and aspire to attain a college degree or certificate. Through the College and Career Access Pathways, students will experience Victor Valley College courses while still in high school realizing that they can complete college level work and reach their academic goals. This translates into higher graduation rates for the high school and increased transfer rates from high school to Victor Valley College.
What does the Research tell us about the benefits of Dual Enrollment?
“Research suggests that dual enrollment can improve the preparation of high school students for college by exposing them early to the academic demands of postsecondary education. Moreover, it can be a powerful academic motivator for young people who did not previously envisage themselves in college.” (Ward & Vargas, 2012) (See handout).
Benefits of Dual Enrollment
Students will:
- have an opportunity to earn high school and college credit simultaneously
- gain an early start on achieving an Associate or Baccalaureate degree
- be considered Victor Valley College students and therefore, allowed access to all services provided by the institution
- have the ability to explore various career pathways and majors before enrolling in college full-time
- be able to enter an accelerated pathway through college that saves students time and money
- build self-confidence in one’s ability to do college-level work helping to ease the transition to college
- have an opportunity to address skill gaps and improve study skills and academic knowledge before becoming a full-time college student
