At the end of each fall and spring semester, students' cumulative grade point average (GPA) and completion rate are evaluated to determine their academic standing. Academic standing is not assessed until a student has attempted at least 12 units of coursework. Students will be notified of their academic standing through their official Victor Valley College student email account.
Academic standing is separate from the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards used by the Office of Financial Aid to determine eligibility for certain federal and state financial aid awards.
Good Standing
A student will be placed in Good Standing when they meet the following:
- Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 2.0 or higher
- Have fewer than 50% of their cumulative attempted units consist of Withdrawals (W), Incomplete (I), or No Pass (NP) grades.
Level I - Notice (formerly known as Probation)
Academic Notice:
- A student is placed on Academic Notice when they have attempted at least 12 units, and has earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below a 2.0.
Progress Notice:
- A student is placed on Progress Notice when they have attempted a total of at least 12 units and, when 50% or more of the cumulative units attempted consist of Withdrawals (W), Incomplete (I), or No Pass (NP) grades.
Returning to Good Standing
- A student shall be cleared from Academic Notice and return to good standing when their cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher.
- A student shall be cleared from Progress Notice when the student’s cumulative percentage of units with “W,” “I,” or “NP” drops below 50%..
Level II - Subject to Pause (formerly known as Subject to Dismissal)
Subject to Academic Pause:

A student is placed on Subject to Academic Pause when they remain on Academic Notice for a second consecutive primary semester (fall or spring) and their cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0.
Subject to Progress Pause:

A student is placed on Subject to Progress Pause if they remain on Progress Notice for a second consecutive primary semester (fall or spring) and 50% or more of their cumulative attempted units consist of Withdrawals (W), Incomplete (I), or No Pass (NP) grades.
*Semesters shall be considered consecutive on the basis of the student's enrollment so long as the break in the student's enrollment does not exceed one primary semester (Fall or Spring).
What happens if I am placed on Subject to Pause?
Students who are on Subject to Pause may continue to enroll in classes but will temporarily lose their priority registration (placed in Block 6) until the student returns to good standing.
Students falling below Academic Standards for two or more consecutive semesters are no longer eligible for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG). Returning to Good Standing
- A student shall be cleared from Subject to Academic Pause and return to good standing when the student’s cumulative grade point average is 2.0 or higher.

Level III - Pause (formerly known as Dismissal)
Academic Pause:
- A student is placed on Academic Pause when their GPA continues to be below a 2.0 at the end the third consecutive primary semester (fall or spring) of enrollment.
Progress Pause:
- A student is placed on Progress Pause if, at the end of a third consecutive primary semester (fall or spring), 50% or more of their cumulative attempted units continue to consist of Withdrawals (W), Incomplete (I), or No Pass (NP) grades.
*Semesters shall be considered consecutive on the basis of the student's enrollment so long as the break in the student's enrollment does not exceed one primary semester (Fall or Spring).
What happens if I am placed on Pause?
Students who are on Pause will be required to take the next primary semester off (Fall or Spring) and meet with a counselor to create an Academic Success Contract to help you get back on track.

Readmission after being placed on Pause
The student will be required to meet with a counselor prior to registration to develop a current “Academic Success Contract” until the performance has cleared Pause status.
Conditions for Reprieval
Students may have their Academic Pause status reprieved if they meet the following conditions:
- Successfully passed all courses with C grades (or Pass) during the most recent semester.
Students may have their Progress Pause status reprieved if they meet one or more of the following conditions:
- Did not have “W,” “I,” and/or “NP” grades in the most recent semester.
Reprieve Process
Counselors will review the records of their assigned dismissed students. If the student meets the reprieve conditions, they counselor will lift the student’s registration hold and notify the Admissions & Records Office to have the student’s standing adjusted to “Reprieve” status. However, the student’s Priority Registration assignment will be Block 6 until the student returns to good standing.
