Canvas Outcomes

Use VVC specific outcomes. Campus outcomes ensure your results appear in college‑level reports. We are working on adding all of them, but if you can’t find yours contact Jamey.Cooper@vvc.edu.

To use them, you will be navigating to our Campus Outcomes and adding them to your course.

Step A — Add the campus outcome to your course

  1. Open your course → Outcomes
  2. In the upper right corner, Click Find. In the left panel, click Account Standards, then search the Victor Valley College outcomes using either the search bar or browse for your department/course group.
  3. Select the outcome(s) you need and choose Add.
    • Tip: Use the Search box to filter by course code or keywords.
    • If you do not find the outcomes for your course, please contact Jamey.Cooper@vvc.edu.

Why this step matters: Canvas only lets you align an outcome to a rubric if the outcome already exists in your course. Adding it here makes it available to your rubric.

Step B — Insert the outcome into a rubric

You can add outcomes to rubrics on Assignments, Quizzes, or Discussions.

Option 1: From an assignment page

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click + Rubric (or Edit Rubric if one exists).
  3. In the rubric, click Find Outcome. They are often nested, so you may need to click through a couple of folders before finding the outcome you want.
  4. Pick the outcome you added in Step A.
  5. (Optional) Use this criterion for scoring:
    • Checked → the outcome’s points count toward the assignment grade.
    • Unchecked → the outcome is assessed for mastery only (shows in Learning Mastery/Outcomes reports) and does not add points to the assignment total.
  6. Click Import to save.

Option 2: From the Rubrics area

  1. In Course Navigation, click Rubrics → open or Add Rubric.
  2. Click Find Outcome, select the outcome, decide whether to Use this criterion for scoring, then Import.

Mastery Gradebook

  • You can see the results in Grades  Learning Mastery Gradebook.

Notes

  • You can align multiple outcomes to a single rubric.
  • Rubrics that are reused across more than one assignment in the same course have editing limits. Plan your rubric first, then reuse.
  • If you believe that one of the system-wide outcomes is incorrect, please contact Jamey.cooper@vvc.edu.

Scoring & reporting tips

  • Campus scale (0–4 Proficiency): 4 Advanced · 3 Proficient · 2 Developing · 1 Emerging · 0 No Evidence. (This is the default wording in campus outcomes.)
  • Decaying Average is the default calculation method at VVC; it emphasizes the most recent evidence of learning while still counting prior attempts. If your course uses a different method, your Outcomes page will show it.
