Why do I need a Home Page?
A well-designed home page in Canvas serves as the entry point to your course, setting the tone for student engagement and success. Rather than using the default "Modules" page, a customized home page aligned with the CVC-OEI Design Rubric provides clear navigation, welcoming course information, and easy access to key resources. A strong home page helps students understand course expectations, locate materials efficiently, and feel supported from day one. Below, you'll find best practices for designing a student-friendly, accessible, and engaging home page that enhances learning in your online course.
What should be included:
- A welcome message and/or video from the instructor
- A brief introduction to the course, its objectives, and what students can expect. This personal touch can help in building a connection and setting a positive tone for the course.
- Instructor contact with applicable links
- Clearly list the instructor's name, email address, office hours, and preferred method of communication. This ensures students know how and when they can reach out for help.
- For DE courses, Canvas Inbox is strongly recommended as best-practice for communication with students.
- Link to Syllabus
- An link to the course syllabus, detailing the course structure, expectations, grading policies, textbook information, and any required materials or software.
- Link to Modules
- Link to an open discussion board for general class questions
- Navigation instructions and/or video
- Brief guidelines on how to navigate the Canvas course site effectively, especially for students who might be new to the platform.
Don't forget to ensure that your course is Published.
