COSMETOLOGY REGISTRATION UPDATE

We have our first group of Cosmetology students in the classroom with their graduation date of June 2024! Our first Manicuring class of students will start on February 12, 2024, and we are very excited!

At this time, these are the only two programs being offered, however, we have plans to start other programs such as esthetician and barbering soon, so keep checking back. While you are waiting for those courses to open please take the prerequisite class for all programs, COSM 0100 Health and Safety. This class is required before anyone can attend an in-person course and can be taken any time, not just right before you start in person.

Once you have completed COSM 0100, you will register for the appropriate program you are interested in. Cosmetology is COSM 0101, manicuring is COSM 0201. The in-person Cosmetology and Manicuring classes will follow the following schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 1:50PM or 2:30PM - 9:20PM. Student fees will be assessed when students register for COSM-0101. A payment plan is available through the Bursar's Office (Touchnet).

REGISTRATION FOR THE NEXT COSMETOLOGY COHORT WILL BE THE END OF APRIL/BEGINNING OF MAY. Keep an eye out for updated dates, and make sure your name is on the interest list so you get notified of the dates.

  • Is there a difference between cosmetology and Barbering?
    • Yes! While the two licenses include many of the same things, Barbers can use a straight blade on a client to shave the hairline and facial area.  Cosmetologists must have a guard on their razors, preventing a clean shave.  Want to do both? We offer a Cosmo to Barber crossover course to those who have a current, unexpired Cosmetology license through the state of California.
  • Can you work as an Esthetician with your Cosmetology license?
    • Cosmetology covers some esthetician procedures such as light therapy, facial massage, and waxing. They can provide those services in a salon under their cosmetology license.  More advanced services such as chemical peels require an Esthetician license. In the future, VVC hopes to offer the Cosmetologist to Esthetician crossover course to those who have a current, unexpired Cosmetology license through the state of California.

  • What career opportunities will I have with a cosmetology license?
    • A cosmetology license is issued by the State of California after completing your required coursework and passing your state board testing. It allows you to pursue a career in hair (salon stylist, hair colorist, freelance/self-employed hairstylist, artist/personality stylist). You can pursue a career in nail artistry (a salon manicurist/pedicurist, freelance nail technician, or a specialized/highly technical nail artist). The makeup industry offers careers in makeup application (general makeup artistry working in a beauty salon or department store, freelance, social media artistry specializing in makeup-related content, brand-endorsed makeup artistry, project and personality makeup artistry). A career in skincare is another route you can take (salon or spa esthetician, freelance, brand representative promoting skin care lines or treatments, specialty skin care techniques such as eyelash extensions or hair removal).

  • What career opportunities will I have with a barbering license?

    • The barbering course is dedicated to the craft of haircutting and styling, the art of shaving using different methods, as well as hair color and other chemical services such as relaxers and perms. **VVC does not currently have a tentative start schedule for this course at this time.

  • What career opportunities will I have with an esthetician license?

    • An esthetician license allows you specialized training in all aspects of the esthetics field, such as chemical treatments, skin treatments, hair removal, brow and lash services, makeup application, and skin analysis. **VVC does not currently have a tentative start schedule for this course at this time.

  • What career opportunities will I have with a manicuring license?

    • With your manicuring license, you can pursue a career in nail artistry (a salon manicurist/pedicurist, freelance nail technician, a specialized/highly technical nail artist).

  • Can you go into barbering after cosmetology school?
    • Many students decide to follow up their cosmetology license with their barber license so that they can get more specialized training and cater to a wider clientele base. VVC plans to offer a bridge program in order to accommodate these students as well. (Please refer to the VVC Barbering Crossover program information above.)
