Wellness Services
Wellness Services is VVC's wraparound support program for currently enrolled students. They don't just handle one kind of help — they walk with you over time, connecting you to mental health care, housing navigation, peer support, and community resources. If you're not sure who to call, this is the place to start.
What Wellness Services offers:
- Mental health support — confidential counseling, coping strategies, and safety planning from licensed mental health professionals
- Peer support — one-on-one conversations with a trained peer who's been through similar challenges
- Housing navigation — help finding housing, connecting with landlords, and staying in stable housing
- Case management — personalized, ongoing support to help you reach your goals and coordinate care across systems
- Community resource navigation — help finding and applying for benefits and services beyond campus

Housing Support
Wellness Services provides housing navigation: assessment of your situation, help finding housing, support working with landlords, and ongoing case management while you secure stable housing. VVC does not directly provide emergency housing placements or hotel vouchers — those come through the county system below.
If you're in a housing crisis right now
For immediate emergency housing or homelessness, the entry point is the county Coordinated Entry System — that's how shelter beds, emergency motel vouchers, and rapid rehousing are assessed and prioritized across San Bernardino County. Two ways to reach it:
- Dial 2-1-1 (or visit 211ca.org) — free, 24/7. They screen you for the Coordinated Entry System and connect you to local resources.
- Walk into Wellness Services on campus (Building 44, Room 103) — staff can do an initial assessment and help connect you to 2-1-1 and Coordinated Entry. They can also refer to community providers like Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAPSBC), which is one of the providers connected to county emergency motel voucher pathways.
Community shelters and housing partners
These are community organizations Wellness Services can refer you to. Contact them directly or work with Wellness Services to coordinate.

Longer-term housing programs
Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)
Monthly help paying rent for low-income families. Voucher amounts depend on your income and local rents. Apply through HACSB (above) or find your local Public Housing Agency at hud.gov. Waitlists are typically long, so this is not a short-term solution.
CalWORKs Homeless Assistance
If you're on CalWORKs, the program can help with security deposits, last month's rent, up to two months of overdue rent (to prevent eviction), and up to 16 days of temporary housing. Apply at BenefitsCal.com or through San Bernardino County TAD.
Help with utility bills
Statewide programs to help cover heating, cooling, and other utility bills exist (including LIHEAP — the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), but availability in the High Desert can be limited. Direct online application through caliheapapply.com may not list a provider serving our immediate region, and some county utility assistance applications require in-person or mail-in submission. Funding is also limited and applications are accepted only while resources are available.
What to do: Start by calling 2-1-1 or walking into Wellness Services. They can confirm what programs are currently active in the High Desert, what the current application pathway is, and whether funding is still available.
Academic Counseling vs. Wellness Services — which one do I need?
Two different offices, two different needs. If you're not sure which one fits, walk into either and they'll point you to the right place.
- Wellness Services (Building 44) — mental health, stress, anxiety, postpartum, housing navigation, case management, peer support.
- VVC Counseling (Building 23) — academic planning: ed plans, course choices, transfer planning, study skills, time management workshops.

Pregnancy, postpartum, and disability accommodations
Pregnancy is a covered disability under federal and California law. The ACCESS Resource Center can set up accommodations like modified attendance for prenatal appointments, deadline extensions if your baby is in the NICU, lactation space, and support for postpartum recovery. ACCESS also helps if you (or your child) have a learning, physical, sensory, or mental health disability.
