About the Dean of Student Services

A person in a suitAI-generated content may be incorrect.

Dean Alvarez’s personal journey is a powerful testament to resilience and determination. Once labeled an “at-risk” student in middle school, he overcame early challenges and graduated from Fontana High School. He began his higher education journey at Riverside Community College (RCC), where he balanced full-time work with coursework.

He went on to earn an Associate Degree from RCC, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Business and Management and a Master of Arts in School Counseling with an emphasis in Higher Education, both from the University of Redlands.

With 25 years of experience all within the California Community College system in student services, Mr. Alvarez has held leadership roles in Admissions & Records, the Assessment Center, Veteran Services, Outreach, Middle/Early College programs, First-Year Experience, the Promise Initiative, Summer Bridge, and as an Undocumented Student Liaison and part-time counselor.

He has also presented at the Riverside County Office of Education’s K–12 Literacy Collaborative and the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP). He is widely recognized as a passionate advocate for equity, inclusion, and student success.

Services & Leadership Philosophy

Dean Alvarez credits the community college experience as the foundation of his personal and professional success. His philosophy emphasizes creating accessible pathways for all students, celebrating inclusivity and cultural values, and building meaningful connections to ensure students feel supported and empowered. He models the principles of servant leadership, placing the needs of students and the campus community first while fostering growth, equity, and shared success. His commitment is clear: Every student matters, and every student belongs at VVC.
